I've had this happen almost all my life!! Every single thing everyone has mentioned! It's been happening more frequently than usual lately.   Same thing: Extremely dizzy (on the brink of fainting), loosing all motor function, twitching, noises skewed, and most bizarre taste of something like penny's or metal in my mouth for the following moments after.  I've inhaled nitrus oxide before recreationally (long time ago) and It's a similar sensation.   I'm 29/f - NO DRUGS NO ALCOHOL steady diet, (could probably use more exercise but definitely a decent amount of walking).  I don't have health insurance at the moment so just like the rest of america, thought i'd solve ailments through the internet.  ;)

Here is what I have found -- I actually fainted once in front of a nurse after I got up to stretch.  The nurse took my blood pressure, in both arms TWICE and my blood pressure had dropped FREAKISHLY LOW.  it was 70 over something...  My blood pressure is normally on the lower side but healthy.

HERE IS WHAT I FOUND THAT HAS HELPED*** For me, when I was doing yoga on a regular basis, these dizzy spells while stretching decreased tremendously.  I don't know if this will help for everyone, but it certainly can't hurt.

I guess I'm dusting off the yoga mat again.  Thank you everyone!

I know this is an old post, but I've been searching all over the web. It happens to me every once in a while when I yawn. Like the one guy said, it feels like I did a whip-it (nitrous). My head gets tingly, my heart beats very very fast and fluttery. I can hear things like the tv, but can't understand the words. I become disoriented yet lucid all at the same time. Like most others, I can somehow manage to sit or lay down without falling. I know it can't be caused by anything I've done, because the first time it happened, I was thirteen. This is before I ever smoked, drank, drugs, etc. I have a long neck and my mouth opens abnormally wide when I yawn, so my best guess would be a kink in a vein or artery in the neck. I've heard low blood pressure might be the cause, but high bp runs in my family and I eat tons of salt. Hope this helps someone.

check out Cervical Rib / Thoracic Outlet Syndrome people.

It's to do with an extra bit of rib pinching your blood flow or something. I just found out about it today.

same thing here, I noticed these episodes increased after a short term period of nitrous use, tried to attribute it to that, but i quit nitrous and other things like tobacco, and alcohol. but it seems they are a lot more frequent now, im definitely going to the doctors office soon just to reassure my health. and a side note, one time i streched my back, blacked out, siezed up and snapped out of it seconds later leaning against the wall, it was quite scary. anyone had a similar experience?

I am 37 years old and have been experiencing this since I was about 14. I get a light headed, dizzy, euphoric sensation, followed by a brief headache, sometimes when I stand up too quickly or stretch. This has caused me to pass out several times, mostly when I was a teenager and wasn't as familiar with it. I saw a doctor as a teen and he conlcuded that it is from a blood pressure drop; my blood pressure is higher when sitting or lying down and would suddenly drop if I got up too quickly. As an adult, it doesn't happen as often, probably because I don't move as fast now. Hopes this might help someone else, and it is great to see it isn't just me.

I have been having this lately as well. I even felt myself having a "pseudo-seizure" I have been a nurse for 25 years, so I can shed a little light on this. But never substitute this for the care or consultation of a physicia.

When yawning, you flex alot of muscles in your neck, this, in turn, can cause some restriction of blood flow through the corrotid arteries to the brain, hence the "grey out" or "blacking out" sensation. This is a mild state of hypovolemic induced hypoxia, (low blood volume= less oxygen to the brain.) This can also, if the neck muscles flex strongly enough, an anoxic Hypemic seizure, or a "pseudo seizure". This is charachterized by a faint awareness of the seizure activity. In an epileptic seizure, you have no awareness of what you are doing. Hence the description, pseudo.

In any case, when you are yawning and feel this coming on, try to relax as much as possable your yawn while simultaneously taking several deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This will hyperoxygenate you and help "clear the cobwebs" of your state. It goes without saying that if you are standing at the onset, sit down or at least brace your back against a wall to slide down if you continue to grey out. Continue to breathe deep but relaxed for a few seconds after the sensation has passed.

I hope this has helped you with a way to lessen the effects of this hypemic hypoxia and its effect. Again, do not solely rely on this advice and information alone. If you have ANY concerns, please seek the care of a physician.

I have all the same symptoms but i use it as an advantage.

Stand on a yoga mat, breathe deeply, relax, lean back and rest on your heels hands in

front of your chest.

Visualize the yoga pose or stretch you want to do

Breathe in deep and hold and stretch backwards as far as possible

come foreward exhaling slowly and melt into the pose that used to hurt you the most as

you  would normally pass out, you will find strength.

I have or had serious back pain and the one thing i have noticed is that my pain

tolerance can be re-wired and my muscles relaxed when in this ultimate state of release

far beyond pre-conceived ideas.

My center of pain was my hip flexors and was unbearable to stretch under normal

conditions. I stretch back and come to rest in a squat and the pain that once was there

is gone and replaced with strength

Namaste

I had this same thing happening to me. Mostly all my life to one degree or another. But about 2 years ago, it started happening regularly, several times a day. It was pretty scary and embarassing since sometimes I'd be in a store or at the office and have to sit down in the middle of an isle all out of whack and people freaking out asking if I was okay.  I went to the doctor and she did some testing and it turns out I have Dysautonomia. The best way to describe it is that my autonomic nervous system (the system that controls stuff like adreneline, heartbeat, blood pressure, digestive track, sweating etc.) isn't functioning properly. Like the switch that controls that is broken.  The doctor said its like being in fight or flight mode. He described it as my body reacting as if there is a Tiger loose in the room when there isn't one. So for no reason, my adrenaline shoots up or my blood pressure plummets etc.  I had to completely cut caffeine out of my diet including chocolate. Luckily, I'm not much of a  sweets person. Although, I think this is why because one of the symptoms is salt cravings. I've always been a salty rather than a sweety. They also put me on blood pressure medicine. Not a big dose because my blood pressure is already a bit on the low side and they didn't want me to bottom out, but mainly for the beta blocker which blocks my adreline levels.  They said it can actually be a pretty serious problem and that if I didn't stop with the caffeine I could end up in a wheel chair unable to remain standing up right without blacking out. Also, that if I kept up with the caffeine the beta blocker would no longer work.  I am much better now and only have an episode maybe 2 times a month now. My doctor said not many doctors really know about this. So, if you are seriously having this happen several times a week, I would bring it up to your doctor.
