For me it is sports radio in the early morning. There are almost no cars out at the time I run and no other runners, so I feel pretty safe while running with the radio. Besides, that is the only way I can keep up with sports.

Love running without music!! Like to hear my breathing. And it's safer if you run outside. I can hear if anyone is coming up behind me.

For 90% of my runs, I run without music. I enjoy the peace. If I'm forced to run on the indoor track, or when I'm doing a speed workout at the track, I'll take my MP3 player. I'm debating using it for my marathon, but haven't decided yet.

I am a recovered music worshipper. I wore headphones on all of my training runs in HS and college and just after college. But I wasn't racing then either.

Then I read schtuff at Kick. The safety thing didn't bother me so much as the points people made about needing to focus and pay attention in your training to get better. It was a tough habit to break, but I have to say that running without music has made me a better runner and racer. I can't imagine running with headphones anymore (unless I were to run on a treadmill).

Also, I've seen many times where wearing headphones would have been dangerous since making the switch.

I do what I can to lure people away from the music. I know how tough that can be. But I also can say from experience that you become a better runner without them and you will be an order of magnitude safer.

And if you are a female that runs outside alone with headphones, you are making a very unsafe decision.

oh, here's me: I only allow myself to run with music outdoors WHEN I AM IN A SECLUDED AREA cuz there's no danger of traffic. i haven't been outdoors since November though and will need Runner X's 12-step program to break the headphone habit when i do go back out.

I'm the opposite. I use the music for the short runs and treadmill running. I can't stand treadmill running and it's the only way I can get through the workout.

Indoors... music Outdoors... nada
:1: I have to have music on the treadmill or I'll get off. Outdoors none, partly for safety because I'm just a freaked out girl, and partly because outside I don't need it. Loooonnng runs I usually have someone with me, otherwise I would consider the music, it can get boring out there after 12ish miles.
