Hi. A friend of mine got infected with Epstein-Barr virus, some kind of a herpes or something. I would like to hear some info about that disease. Is it contagious? What are the symptoms? I have a sore throat, lymph nodes in my neck are swollen and fear that I got EBV too. Help!

Hi. Epstein-Barr virus is in the herpes family. It`s a contagious viral illness that affects lymph nodes in the neck and throat. Some other symptoms are fever and fatigue, sometimes even a rash, eye pain, or liver infection. EBV can affect anyone, mostly teenagers. The incubation period is some 7-14 days (30-50 if you`re an adult). Often, no treatment is needed – EPV is a self-limited disease. Bed rest and drinking fluids will do you good. Sometimes, corticosteroid drugs are needed to reduce swelling.
