I just found this page today. Yesterday I woke up and noticed the left side of my tongue was swollen. Noticeable, but it did not affect my speech. Today it is more pronounceed. Very weird, it is only the left side of tongue, and not the throat or face.

Leading up to this I have had a bout of bad back, neck and hand pain from a strain begining 10 days ago. All on the left side and left hand has been very swollen and painful. 7 days ago I started with a (rash?) on my hands. They were kind of like the bumps you get with heat rash, except they had yellow heads and seemed to be filled with fluid. Within 12 hrs as they appeared they turned red (like blood under the pimple) They are still slightly raised but have not been painful.

The reason I write now is the last post reguarding Ibuprophen (aleive) I have been taking a lot of Motrin to relieve the pain. Average 800mg 3 x a day. Now I wonder is it the reason for my tongue swelling? I am willing to try anything.

I had seen a Dr yesterday and he recommended Benadryl as he thought it may be a food allergy. But if it were food, why just the left side of my tongue, and not my throat. I am going to stop the Motrin and see if it improves. Hope to update soon.

I have been doing research for a friend who has had this mysterious swelling on one side of her tongue and gums for the last 2 years. She is beginning to think it has something to do with sugar but can't pin point anything specific. She also had a severe reaction to Actonel (similar to Fosomax) and after telling the drs. there was a problem, she ended up having bone grafts to her jaw bone because of "dead jaw" caused by the drug. She is in a quandry and it doesn't look like there's much help out there according to the experiences on this site. She did have allergy testing done but the only thing that showed up was Cobalt! Any suggestions?

I have had the same swelling for 3 years. The face, lips, tongue sometimes the throat . . . been to the Emergency Room 4X - I now carry Benedryl shots that my doctor gave me and I take Benadryl pills that make me so sleepy I cannot work. I too have been tested for everything. Now, the Nurse Practioner is going to refer me to a Allergy Specialist in Texas. They are also suggesting a Peptide treatment for Allergies (shots are $275 apiece). I would be interested in knowing which States we all live in. I am in the Midwest in Indiana. Someone told me it could be Genetically Engineered Crops especially Soy and Corn. If anyone hears of anything else please post.

I react with swelling of the lip, eye and cheek as you've all described when I eat articificial colour (e.g. food colouring, esp. yellow #5, also called tartrazine), artificial sweeteners (esp. Splenda), sulphates, sulphites and sulfa drugs, and nitrates and nitrites.  I suspect you may be reacting to the same things, especially colour as it is added to so many foods.  Try eliminating colour from your diet and see if that helps.

I have all these symptoms.  It's been two weeks so far.  Very hellish.  I did have a rash develop on my ears and back of neck first, soon after I saw a giant bite on my thigh that bruised big then the next day there was bruising down my leg.  I have a dog And I have pulled ticks off of me with no indication or bullseye rash after.  My next step is to get tested for Lyme disease.  I'll go from there.  I hope I don't have to live on meds.  I'm 28 and was perfectly healthy before.  One walk in clinic put me on 8 days of prednisone, that did not help and severe swelling happens to be a side effect of steroids.  My welts in my scalp and my itchy hives were worse on the prednisone then once off it within days the swelling started and has been happening for 10 days since, both eyes, bottom lip, left cheek, and front of both shoulders.  Weird.  So I heard prednisone can take up to 3 weeks to get out of your system.  We shall see, so hard to pinpoint.  I don't think its a food allergy.  I never had one although i know they can just develop.  Although you go crazy thinking about what you ate prior to swelling so I am avoiding nuts but I think thats bullocks.  Anyway good luck.  I'm hoping it's not months and months and years and years seems ridiculous.

I definitely know its food related. Tested negative for Lyme but was treated for it. Tested negative for celiac with blood panal. Take Zyrtec and Zantac when it happens but it's often too late. Too much citric acid, nuts, peanuts and some other random things cause it for sure. Never had allergies. Seems to be happening once a week.

my throat swoll up this morning so I took Allegra and Zantac, because of this they wouldn't test me when I went in today. They gave me a ton of prednisone so I could ween off it slower than the times its been given to me before. They need my skin to be clear when they test me so it doesn't create any false positives. However they also, need me off allergy meds and steroids for a certain amount of time so that doesn't create any false negatives. I have another appt in 2 weeks.

70 Year old male. Have had similar symptoms for 12 years - lips, cheeks and recently left side of tongue. I can hardly wait till it occurs in my throat - NOT!!

Tried Reactine for two years with no change. I take Atarax to get rid of the swelling. It works within a day. I am about to try Zantac for a month, and if Zantac alone doesn't help, my Allergy Specialist will add a second med.

I am convinced that, even though there may be an underlying allergy, the attack is brought on by a psychonlogical reaction to something that upsets or bothers me, and it doesn't have to be anything major or serious.

Have had allergy testing twice, and do not yet carry an epi pen, though it has been suggested.

It's been 12 years now with this cronic problem - and without drugs it still occurs as frequently as when I was taking drugs. Now there's no (prednisone) drug side- effects which is good. Swelling still happens mainly at night and about once a week. Stress - good or bad seems to be a trigger when I'm tired. What I've found that works as good as any prescription meds or Benedryl is, over the counter Aerius (Double Action 12 Hours) and strong coffee. It's tough to sleep but after about an hour the swelling starts to subside. If it's just my tongue, talking seems to help it go away faster than not talking. If it's in my throat, I watch TV or something that takes the focus off the swelling and stay calm. Have to admit that a few times I've driven to the Hospital Emergency parking lot with coffee and waited a couple of hours there, before I think I'll live and drive back home.
Good luck to all of us :)
