My mom has this problem. She is in her late fourties. She passes out when she stands up too fast or bends over. It doesn't happen all the time but it happens alot. We have seen all kinds of doctors. The cardiologist came up with the conclusion that her blood preasure drops when she stands up or bends over and so they had her do a procedure that closed off the bad veins in her legs to help the blood move easier. This did not help. She still doesn't know why it happens. For everyone who has said that you can't die from this, you're wrong, if you pass out and fall you could hit your head and die. So many bad things can happen. It makes me worry about my mom all the time. I spend my day taking care. I wish that there was an answer.

I've been getting panic attacks since I was about 14 (I'm now 21) and so they're nothing new to me. In the last three years however, I've been noticing that when I bend down quickly to pick something up my heart beats as if it's having a panic attack. More often than not it goes back to normal within seconds, but sometimes goes into a full-blown panic attack and lasts up to 15 minutes.

I get light headed and my breathing is slightly more difficult, but it doesn't usually get worse than that.

I haven't seen anyone about it, but I am going for blood tests soon (mostly because I haven't had one for over a decade and I feel like I should take one, just to be sure that everything is healthy). My mother has told me to get an EKG, but I don't think it's anything major.

Glad to see this happens to other people though!

I just had this happen to me. I am a 38 year old male. I bend over to get a drink from the water fountain and my heart jumped into my throat and I couldn't breath. I just kinda held my breath and thought I was about to die. I loosened my belt buckle and started to sweat a little in a panic. In about 45 seconds I could breath again great and I felt like I could run or do anything without a problem. I just started to self treat my high cholesterol so I am taking fish oil, lots of fiber etc. Iam happy to be alive and feel great now.

Its called orthostatic hypotension when you stand up too fast and you get dizzy or have a black out for a second. But Im talking about when I bend over to pick something up then I get upright and literally get short of breath. Thats weird to me and im a nurse. Its not normal but have been checked out and wondering if the dr's are missing something. Do you have this? Heart disease runs in my family big time but dr's dont seem concerned or dont believe me.

This has really happened to me for as long as I can remember. I have always been under the impression that it has to do with the sudden change in blood pressure when you go from sitting to standing and vice versa. I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with most of you. Most people you talk to have had this happen as well. I'm also pregnant now and it does happen more frequently now, even when I'm standing completely still. I talked to my OB and she said it's completely normal. When you're pregnant, your body sometimes struggles to make enough blood to get oxygen to you and the baby. Low oxygen & change in blood pressure= blackout. No worries you guys, your hearts work totally fine. If you have this happen more than 3 times a day though, I would be a little concerned about blood pressure issues. Also, if you are having trouble breathing from a simple change in posture, like some of you are saying, then you might be a little more concerned as well.

I have had the same thing since I was in middle school, and I am now 42! Bending over seemed to "trigger" it. Heart races, VERY hard feeling...in my neck, and I would feel weak very suddenly. Sometimes it would last 5 minutes, other times up to over an hour!!! In the last year I have been to a cardiologist, wore the heart moniter for 3 days...etc, etc...They never really found anything either.
I found out the way to stop it immediately for me though...lie down on your left side (the same side as your heart). I hope it works for everyone here...but it stops mine EMMEDIATELY. It is so bazar how it will be going 100 mph, and just lying down...the heart just starts going back to normal, and I feel okay in about 5-10 minutes.
Good luck to you all....try this next time it happens, and hopefully it won't last as long!!!!

What an awesome forum! For years I've wondered if anyone else has experienced this!!! I never searched it until I just had another attack out of no-where. Thank you guys for posting your experiences, it makes me feel more "normal" to know that I'm not the only one out there. It really had me worried for a while. I've been through two heart monitors, EKG's, a heart specialist, etc. I'm now 27, but this all started when I was a child. After $1000's later, everything has checked out fine. But it's a good feeling to know that you guys can relate.

POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) , OH (orthostatic hypotension), OI (orthostatic intolerance), vasovagal syncope, neurally mediated syncope, dysautonomia (autonomic dysfunction)----------google these terms. I think this will help.

I have the same problem for years that sometimes when i bend over my heart goes into overdrive and beats soooo hard and soooooooo fast like ive been running for hours. I dont get blackouts though. And it feels like theres a ball in my throat kind of thing when it happens which makes it hard to breathe too. I just try and relax when it happens and sit down for about 6-10 minutes and then the heart just clicks back to a normal rate. I never drink much water so i definitely think dehydration could be a factor. I first got it while playing rounders when i was about 14 and a ball hit my chest as i bent down. So its something to do with the action of bending down and your heart being julted. I think your body thinks youre in an accident or something so your adrenaline swooshes in and your heart rate goes up? Ive also got it in the shower a lot of time when its very hot and short of oxygen and i bend down to pick up soap or something. and ive got it a lot when im out shopping for clothes and im hot and in a changing room and i bend down to pick up some clothes. so i think its something to do with physical strain when your hot, doing exercise etc. Id love to find out what the actual name for it is though.

I have just found this site..its great...I have been having blackouts for 2 years I thought it was the start of menopause cause I am now 51yrs but the doctor said it wasn't.I first starting feeling funny when I was gardening and I stood up they weren't very bad then but they are gradually getting more common.I thought it was due to stress and anxiety but they stopped for 2 years and they have now  started again. If I walk fast and bend over to pick something up I will feel strange lean on a wall and then pick myself up off the ground.I recover very quickly despite the bruises and cuts I have had from falling and banging my head on the ground! I have EEG ECG MRI heart monitor ultra sounds xrays nothing shows up...blood pressure is fine blood tests reveal nothing!I think I am going crazy cause there is no reason for this.I have an underactive thyroid and am on Oroxine but was told by the doctor this  is not a problem. So I am off to the doctor today as I have had 4 in as many days.Lets see where we go from here.

I have had this exact same problem.  It occurs around 6 times per year and happened when I bent down to put my slippers on after the birth of my child.  The nurse told me to put my head down low towards my knees but that never helps.  I usually try holding my breath and it will slow but not always.  I haven't found a solution yet and my doctor just shrugs and says it doesn't sound serious.  I think I need to get a 2nd opinion.  If anyone finds a solution I'd love to hear it.  I have hyperthyroidism but it is more of a physical reaction to bending forward.
