If you feel your heart beat faster especially when lying down, you can prop yourself up with pillows so that your head position is not level with your heart. sleep on your right side will also help. at least that works for me. good luck.

(1) "Minimal mitral and tricuspid regurgitation" means that the mitral and tricuspid valves are leaking minimally. This is present in at least 15-20% of the general population. These leaks, when minimal, do not cause symptoms.
(2) Their are very few organic conditions that will cause a constant pounding heartbeat. Aortic regurgitation (leaking aortic valve) is one. Others would include ventricular bigeminy, a hyperthyroidism, chronic cocaine use, and a pheochromocytoma. Anxiety disorder is the condition most associated with this type of symptom. Many conditions can cause an intermittent or sporadic pounding heartbeat, the most common being a heart rhythm disturbance.
i have it too and this is all i could find, its a doctors answer from a girl with a very strong pounding heartbeat

Hi all,
I have been experiencing most of what you guys had mentioned;
Strong & pounding heart beat (more obvious when I'm lying down), sudden rise of heart beart (eg: from 60 bpm to 100-130 bpm) even when I'm doing nothing such as watching TV, dizziness, difficulty breathing during palpitations (sometimes), fatigue, weakness
As most of you, I have done numerous ECGs, stress tests (twice in 6 months!), blood test, Holter monitor, and now i'm having another device called rhythm card. All the tests returned normal and nothing was detected except for the Holter monitor.
The results with the Holter monitor only confirmed to the cardiologist what I was telling him was real. At first I didn't think he took me seriously because I keep coming back to see him when my palpitations came,( my house is near to a hospital), and each time i saw him (either at the A&E ward or his room), the ECG will show nothing and he will say I'm fine and he will ask if I'm under any stress? Only after 4 months, I told him I wanted to put on the Holter monitor so that I could capture my palpitations using the device. After a week, the ECG reading from the Holter monitor showed I quite frequent palpitation, one event showed my heart beat was about 180 bpm.
Even with the Holter monitor results, the cardiologist couldn't conclude what is it I'm really having. At first he said it could be SVT, then nodul tachycardia and sinus tachycardia (ST). He said most probably I'm having ST but he couldn't really confirm it, as I also complained of my strong heart beat, which isn't a symptom of ST.
Then it came to a point I realised I had to do some own research, and I'm really surprised to see a lot of people having the same problem! and mostly still looking for a definite answer on what we are having! I really wish to get an answer for my piece of mind and I want my normal life back. This condition (or is it a disease?) certainly affects my daily routine and work, as my mind will mostly concentrate on my heart, which I think doesn't help the situation, but I really can't help but think about it all the time.
Someone even mentioned something about mind over matter, which I believe could be quite true, if the condition we have is not life threatening. At this point, I would want to believe this condition is not life threatening, as some of the posts had mentioned of having it for several years or several months.
Previously the cardiologist put me on herbesser but it didn't work well on me, so the doctor changed my medicine to concor, which certainly helps in reducing my fast heart beat and is making me calmer, but I still have that strong heart beat! My strong heart beat sometimes last for up to 2 hours, causing me to be sleep deprived (hard to sleep when your heart feels like exploding!). Currently this strong heart beat occurs on a daily basis, and sometimes can occur up to 8 times a day.
I hope to find answers soon.
I just felt I had to contribute and share my experience, and while typing, I do feel some pressure lifted of my chest by sharing my story with you guys

I've been having these exact same things for years and I've wondered what it was. I've gone to the Dr and gotten an EKG (iirc) and some other tests but they never find anything. I'm 29 and i work out 4-5 times a week and play soccer as much as possible and I have a resting heart rate of around 60 bpm so I'm in decent shape and my family doesn't have a history of heart problems.
But I have found that if you drink a full bottle of water, it goes away pretty quickly so I just chalked it down to good old fashioned dehydration but it might have something to do w/ too much salt or something. I don't really know but if you're suffering from it try a big glass of water. Hope it helps.

I had this 3 times over the last 2 years. Heart was beating fast, I sweat a little bit, jaw hurts slightly....But once the fast beating goes away I felt completely normal, actually felt quite good. Well, that happened while I was quite stressed out. A few days later, it happened again but very light and went away for about 5 minutes.
Then it happened again this morning. So I backtracked to all my activities for the last 2 weeks and especially yesterday and this is what I found
1. I played 3 hrs of volleyball and did not drink water so "dehydration"
2. It happened when I lay down or sit down and gets better as I walk or standing up so "posture"
3. I also felt that when I inhale and exhale deeply it tends to help a little bit....
The bottom line is I don't think this heart beating/fast beating/strong beating is a "disease" but definitely a warning sign to those who experience it. Warning sign for what I do not know and obviously our wonderful doctors have no freaking clue anyways.....But I can say this, excercise, eat healthy, train your mind to lessen stress, stay healthy...........This may do the trick!
One thing I know for sure, you keep doing what you're doing now and not changing your diet or your lifestyle THIS PROBLEM WILL PERSIST! Try to change it and see what happens in 6 months. If them doctors don't know what you're talking about, don't take any of the pills to correct it.........b/c how could they cure you if they don't even understand your symptom! Hope this helps.

Hi all, I am 36 and have this as well. I also get chest pains with mine and have recently been diagnosed with prinzmetal angina which is a coronary artery spasm. I am now on several different medications so I would strongly advise you seek medical attention if you are having any other associated symptoms such as.....headache, heartburn, pain in the chest, back, shoulders, arms, neck or jaw.

Seeing as more people keep stumbling on this with the same problem as i have i'll leave my story,
i'm a 20 year old male, i fluctuate between 113-120 pounds, im fairly fit and i smoke. periodically throughout the day, sometimes 4-5 times a day in short 5-10 minute outbursts my heart pounds hard enough for me to watch my ribs, stomach, or other weird random places on my body pounding up and down with the heart beat. When my girlfriend lies her head on my chest at night it will pound so hard it lifts her head up. i have the ability to pop my the center of my chest plate like you would your knuckles and i don't know if this pertains to it or not, i wouldn't imagine so but i figured i'd include it. i just started to feel my heart pounding in my left thigh, actually lol. i can hear it in my ears, throbbing i feel in my head, and it happens throughout my whole body when it happens. i feel highly aware of my heart, and it can become all i can focus on, makes sleeping hard and sometimes makes me feel just slightly top heavy.
hope this helps
somebody should take their blood pressure next time they are experiencing this and post some results

Hey, in response to your question...hopefully you read this because shortness of breath when laying down is a serious condition! When you have shortness of breath randomly at night where it wakes you up, you probably have Paroxysmal nocturnal orthopnoea. Sob upon laying down is not a good thing, and can be indicitive of heart failure or lots of other bad things! Follow up on it!
Why does this happen? When you lay down, you have more blood filling your heart, or a higher "pre-load". Normally in a healthy person, this isn't a problem and actually will increase the amount of blood the heart ejects each time (stroke volume), and even strengthen the contraction via the "frank starling mechanism" (like pulling back on a rubberband) In an unhealthy heart, the heart cannot handle this increase in preload, and cannot overcome the increase in increase in peripheral resistance associated with laying own (the increase in bloodpressure), leading to backup in the inferior vena cava, further increasing total peripheral resistance!!!
It might be from something else too...

I can't take this anymore.. My heart always feels like its pounding. I will sometimes lay the remote control on my chest when im laying down and see how much it shakes every time my heart pounds. There's 2 instances in my life: 1) when my heart is calm, relaxed, and I can actually sleep and take a nap and 2) when my heart is fluttering/beating out of my chest. For #2, my heartrate is normal, but every single BEAT trembles my body. I can literally hear my head moving on my pillow at night when my heart pounds.. for hours.. and hours. I've had an EKG, doctors appointments.. everything is healthy. I'm a 22 year old healthy male. I can't take this anymore. I can't live with my heart constantly beating so HARD with every beat to where I can't sleep. I can't even get 6+ hours a sleep a night. I'm constantly battling sleep deprivation and walking around tired all day because my heart won't stop pounding so hard. I have a final exam presentation tomorrow - and I'm so far behind on sleep that I can't even focus. Hell, I tried to take a nap 3x today and all my heart could do was beat HARD with every pound. I I love the times where my heart feels relaxed and I can't notice the beating.. which is about 15% of my life. I won't do this anymore...I'd rather be dead than deal with this for the rest of my life. I live a healthy lifestyle. I'm a nice, out-going person.... I don't know what to do anymore... ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed **

Hi , i have had pretty much all the symptoms that you are all talking about, had it for a little over a year, i seem to be the only unhealthy one, it all started driving to work after a long night of heavy drinking, i was also told by the doctor that i have panic disorder, so i ended up getting about 8 ekg's and an echoicardiogram. i want to exercise but with my heart pounding so hard after any physical activity i've been too scared to.even during sex or anything strenuous i feel my pulse pounding through my entire body, and sometimes the shortness of breath, and i can almost always feel my heartbeat even when sitting and doing nothing. I absolutely hate this feeling, makes me feel like there is something seriously wrong and i'm gonna have a heart attack or something, ever since i got a ton of tests done at the doctors (and bills) i havent had anymore panic attacks cause i know that was part of the problem, and my heart came back normal study. but my doctor also suggested a stress test, to check how my heart reacts to physical activity (may be a good idea for some of you that are really worried by this condition) but i have yet to do it, ie swamped with thousands in doctor bills :( in a way it makes me feel better that at least there is alot of people out there that are experiencing something similar (not that i would wish this on anyone) but thank you everyone that posted and shared your story, i at least feel a little better knowing i'm not the only one. Hi, I have the same problem and I think that exercise is definitely a trigger, and that if you have these symptoms then your heart is too strong.
I'm an active 20 year old girl and suffered from anorexia when I was younger, meaning I over exercised a lot without proper warm ups etc which really must have strained my heart. Now I'm a healthy weight and eat healthily too, but when I exercise this really makes my heart beat fast and hard so I can't sleep either.
I've been to the doctors and am going to have an ECG, but I'm really worried as I can't sleep and have been experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath. I find that certain food (eg good for muscles like protein, omega 3 etc) makes it much worse.
I really hope that everyone finds a solution to this, and I guess the only option is to just not exercise, but that seems contradictory to having a healthy lifestyle.
What do people think?
