Yep, I get the same feeling as you all. Its on my right upper throat feels like behind my right tonsil or just below it in my throat and it feels like a big mucus blob, but I can't clear it. Its so annoying. and the person who wrote
"FIGHT THE LUMP, I WILL SALLOW THE LUMP" cracked me up but thats how I feel.
that one webpage :voicedoctor.net/therapy/cps.html is totally on how it feels. My mom passed away recently and I have been going through alot of stress.

I was sitting in my house looking an movie times on my laptop, when i had the feeling that i had a finger nail or a small piece of food lodged in the top/back of my throat.
When i tried to cough it up i couldnt, so i gargled some water, and managed to hack it up.
When it came up i brought it to the front of my mouth and put it in my hand to see what it was.
It was a small yellow chunk. It crumbled easily when squashed between fingers.
I then smelt it to see if it was a particular food id eaten recently, but (this really is the only pleasant way to describe the smell) it smelt like poo! (i know its horrible!)
Has anyone actually had the same problem, and had a solution given to them by a medical professional?
Thankyou.

I honestly didn't expect my search for " lump in throat" to be fruitful at all but i found this thread right away. It's been going on for me for the past 4 days or so and doesnt hurt but is rather irritateing and worrisome. I, like others, thought it was some sort of growth due to smokeing a pack a day. It feels like there is a pill stuck in my throat, i plan on going to urgent care tomorrow to get some actual answers, i'll keep you posted

I've dealt with this off and on for years, occasionally experiencing it. Weird occurrence, but nothing overwhelming. . .
Recently I started drinking a whole-body-cleanse program, and have been dealing with a healing crisis.... The entire back of my throat feels like it's got those. And suddenly everything smells AWFUL! I know that's how detox works, it wasn't a big shock.
What it says to me, though, is that the frequency of these things seems to be related to the toxicity level I'm dealing with. Right now, I'm overwhelmed with toxins as I stir them up and try to get them out of my body. And in the process, the toxins are coming out in every way they can.
They seem to be related to oral thrush, a yeast overgrowth. I'd try cutting sweets to an absolute minimum, maybe add probiotics to your regimen.
Another possibility I've recently researched (but haven't tried), Kali Bichromium is a homeopathic preparation that helps with "sticky phlem, scratchy feeling, inability to clear throat." Looked like it could be useful.

I went to the doctor and they referred me to a Gastroenterologist. Took me a few weeks to get in. He is going to do a Endoscopy to take a look. I guess this is a very common thing. The esophogus can narrow and cause food to get stuck, they go in and somehow open it back up, or he said there could be other reasons like the esophogus can be twisted and maybe need to be straightened/pulled back in to shape??? So, I could not get the procedure scheduled for another month! I am going on vacation and I keep thinking that i am going to choke or something, but I guess things will be fine. I was just hoping someone could tell me how to clear it up while I wait for my appointment! I had it occassionally at first, then every day for about a week, then it went about for 2 weeks, now it's back and it's been another 2 or 3 days with no relief. I drink so much water to try and get it down, but doesn't work! I've tried gargling, but it's too far down my throat by my adams apple, and I tried throat lozenges, and lots of gulps of water!!! NOTHING works!

Everytime I take a pill, whatever it may be prescribed (or OTC) for, I get this irritating sensation in the back of my throat. It really does feel like the medication is getting stuck in my throat. The worst part is, it doesn't go away! I have stopped taking numerous prescibed meds because I honestly cannot stand this! I have even started to request injectable medications because I'd rather deal with syringes than pills, regardless of how small. All the physicians I've seen are opposed to prescribing injectable meds when they are available in the "more convienent pill form." I'm at a point where I refuse to take tylenols, allergy medications and oral contraceptives, not to mention other tablets prescribed for anxiety, depression and sleep aids that make living with bipolar disorder almost as insufferable. Does anyone have a remedy for this throat irritation??

Hello everyone,
Among all that I've read, the following seemed to be a good find and just wanted to share...
Cricopharyngeal spasm
Information for patients with a lump in the throat sensation
Causes
This syndrome results from a spasm in the cricopharyngeus muscle. It is a self limiting disorder that will resolve on its own. The symptoms are so characteristic that as soon as a patient tells me they have a lump in the throat, I can usually describe all of their symptoms to them.
Symptoms
Lump in the throat sensation
feels like a golf ball, tennis ball ... is stuck in my throat
feels like my tie is too tight
feel like I am being strangled
my throat feels swollen
The symptoms can be mimicked by pushing on the cartilage in the neck just below the Adams apple.
The lump comes and goes depending on the day.
Symptoms are usually best in the AM and worse later in the day
Stress aggravates the symptoms.
Saliva is difficult to swallow yet food is easy to swallow.
Eating, in fact, often makes the tightness go away for a time.
The symptoms are similar to getting choked up at a wedding or a funeral.
Physiology 101
There are two valves in the esophagus or swallowing tube. The are normally contracted and they relax when you swallow so that food can pass through them going to the stomach. They then squeeze closed again to prevent regurgitation of the stomach contents. If the normal contraction becomes a spasm, like a charlie horse of the calf muscle, these symptoms start. Stress often makes these spasms much worse. Many people have experienced neck tightness when stressed and this is similar. Even if not caused by stress, stress will make the spasm much worse.
A management program
An exam of the neck and throat is extemely important to eliminate serious problems. In fact, it enters most peoples minds that a lump in the throat might be a cancer. In practice, real lumps in the throat, such as a cancer are not felt. It is one of the reasons that a cancer can get so big before it is discovered. It probably is fortunate that we don't have great sensation in the throat as we would then feel every particle of food, with every meal as it travels down the throat. So lacking great sensation in the throat, problems are a little mysterious there.
Unfortunately, many physicians are not familiar with how symptomatic a cricopharyngeal spasm can be and I often see patients who have been extensively tested with Barium swallows, esophageal endoscopies, pH testing, CT scans, xrays, MRI scans and they all come back normal or possibly with some finding that is completely unrelated to the lump in the throat sensation. Really, just a good exam of the throat, voice box and neck is all that is necessary and it is sufficient as well. You should know the following:
Just knowing the tightness is not a sign of cancer frequently helps relieve the discomfort.
You will get better. Often improvement is over several weeks or even a few months, but occurs once one knows what the problem is.
Warm fluids should comfort the throat. Consider a cup of warm tea when the lump is bothersome.
If stress lets up, the symptoms improve. Think about what stress might be making this lump worse.
Muscle relaxants, such as valium, would be a good treatment, except for their addictive properties.
Medication
I sometimes dispense several valium (perhaps 4) as a test to prove the symptoms are from muscle spasms. I recommend taking one of the Valium on a weekend, when being alert is not important. When the lump occurs, one takes the Valium. Within an hour, there should be significant improvement in the lump sensation. If the symptoms improve after taking the muscle relaxant, then the symptoms are reasonably from a muscle spasm. Again, the knowledge that a muscle relaxant makes a lump disappear can help confirm that the cause of the lump is from a muscle and not an actual lump.
I have also tried injections with a local anesthetic, often with good, but temporary results. It does help to confirm in the patients mind, there is the possibility of relief.
If a local anesthetic injections helps, I have with inconsistent results injected botulinum toxin into the cricopharyngeus muscle, sometimes with prolonged relief.
Benefits
The symptoms go away.

Hey people, I was desperate before I found this forum because nothing nothing just cured my constant ball sensation down my throat. I saw doctors and doctors, who sent me endoscopies, wrote prescriptions for reflux and even tiroid. But I just read the above message and checked the site which is: voicedoctor.net/therapy/cps.html
Oh boy, just read that website please, it is not a joke, it is a perfect match. My last 9 months passed trying to tell the doctors what my problem is and seems like none could understand. But in that site, everything very detailly is written, all the symptoms, fits like a glow. I said to myself, man I just found myself a cure.
It is only a muscle spazm, people, only a spazm in our one of the two muscles which squizes the food down the throat to send it down. One is just below the adams apple, the other is down I guess.
So I went for a medicine shopping and bought myself a good muscle spazm reliever, or muscle reliever. If you wanna try your own just buy a muscle reliever, the ones you take when you have cramps. But not the one for the stomach spazm, I guess the pill has to be for the muscle and skeletons system.
And I took the pil for 2 days, the sensation down the troat just "poof" gone! I just couldn't believe it. How many times I swallowed my saliva, try to figure out if it is there, but it is not! At least give it a try. If doesn't help the only thing you will get is reileved muscles which is something good also.
But one thing, in that website doc says the spazm is beacuse of stress. Says some people have neck pains when they are under stress and some may have throat spazm. Now the sensation for me comes and goes rarely I must say, but comes with a very weak strenght now and does not stay and just go after couple of hours. I drink green tea, it helps a lot, a good habit which I gained after a wrong diagnosis, so-called reflux pain.

Im a practicing bisexual teen male. And about 3 to 4 weeks after being with another man in which the condom tore, i developed some symtoms which worried me. I was the top, and i never practice unsafe sex and as soon as this happened we stopped.
Anyhow, so the symptoms i started to develop were akin to what some of you have been descibing, the extreme/sore/tight throat for one anyhow.
After i noticed this symtom and others, i freaked, i thought maybe hiv, so i went and got tested for std's and a week later i tested negative for everyting including hiv. The hiv test was out of the 6week buffer, so technically theres a possibility i still could have this despite it not turning up on the hiv test i had (at the doctors request, i guess cos im a same sex practicing citizen and i had never been tested). But im gona go back for the revealing hiv test in about a week.
The thing is only now does it mimick the sore throat problem.
Initially it felt as if something was living in my throat, a spider or something, but it tingled (it all convinced me i had an std). It would rise up and then lower, cyclacly, and it (and still does) was worse at night.
I had other worries, i had nausea, headaches and extreme lethargy.
At some times the throat feeling was tingly, at others itchy, at others it was pain. Anyhow, cos of the symptoms and timing since the rubber-break, i was preparing for bad news.
HOwever after receiving the nonresults i was baffled at what it is. In fact, it seemed to go away for a whole week, before returning now, but less tingly and moreso exactly how you guys are describing it.
Oh some more things i just remembered. In the weeks before me getting tested when it was really bad, it would move right down onto my chest (the feeling of a presence that is, like a stiffness) and it would sit on the top of my chest before moving up and doing that cyclacally (cant spell that word). The other thing i noticed was pain in my penis and where my backbone meets my anus. These pains would only come once in a while but theyd be there. I smell as if i have something too - like i smell sick. I feel like i have something, yet i tested negative for all the std's that gay guys get tested for like gonno chlamydia, syph, hep, hiv.
Its really weird, and this post has become a book so ill tie it up.
One more weirdness i noticed. Little white singular crumb for lack of a better descriptor at the opening of my anus. I didnt know what it was, it was hard. Noticed it on a few diff occasions. And then a larger one, that defintley resembled an almond (and even smelled like one). So im postulating i might be alergic to almonds (i eat a handful every morning with breaky) and yeh.
So i got no idea what i got, but i got something, yet i tested negative for all stds. I spose instead of writing a book i should see my gp.

I have been reading this thread and well this is kind of scary, when I lay down on my left side at night my throat really feels like its closing in. In fact I literally have to turn over to make it stop. I dont know what it could be , im not nor have I been sick , but even now sitting up I can feel something is just not right on the left side , its not on my neck itself its inside. I feel like something is stuck. Has anyone found out anything at all about what it could be?

Yes, if someone says they are a doctor and professor, but writes, 'enflamed' - they are definitely not a doctor or professor. nice try. not to mention the medical advice was ridiculous and off base completely. there's a psychological reason that person would pose as a doctor, but of course the smart doctor would know that term ;-)

I have the exact same problem. except mine started a little differently.
First off, I am a teenager.
I used to be a heavy marijuana smoker. I went to California for a month to visit some family. The night I came back I smoked a blunt, all was good. Then the next night I smoked a blunt of really rreally strong (and good btw) weed.
As I was taking my last hit I felt something in the back of my throat so I tried to swallow it, when I did I couldnt breath at all, I was gassping for air, So i told my sisters boy friend to do the hym-lick on me, and i started breathing again. I swollowed again to see if it was there and it was, the same thing happen like 3 times that night. I thought it was an allergic reaction at first but I can still feel it. (this happened about 3 or 4 months ago) I've been to the doctor and I will be going to the ENT soon for them to check out my throat. The only thing that helps so i dont feel it, is a phlegm build up, when it goes away i can feel it.
and one time I did cough up a piece of hard yellow stuff...---one guy said he did that on the first page of the blog--

I went to the doctor about 8 years ago with this and I even knew the name back then but forgot cause its a fuss over nothing I even forgot the name, sadly this happens to certain people, nothing can be done to stop it but there is nothing dangerous in the slightest about it, I'd just have a few mints if they keep on coming since they smell pretty bad.
