I found it quite informative, both on what phlegm is in the first place and on how to get rid of it or when to worry.

Everyone has heard that the acids in Coca-Cola will dissolve a nail in a few days - well, think of your throat after years of drinking it. Every day, depending on what I eat causes the flood gates to open and I'm hacking out the mucus. After a week of cutting out the soda's and a big cutback of sugar my mucus production has dropped in half.
The advice: Change the diet:
1. Cut out all processed sugars - switch to sugar substitutes (the ones that don't cause cancer).
2. Cut out soda drinks, especially cola drinks. If you like carbonated drinks then buy the carbonated waters and create or put in different flavors.
3. If both of these items are not part of your diet then keep a diary of everything you do eat and try to narrow down the foods that you may be allergic to and then cut it out of your diet. Years ago I went to a NAET doctor and I found out that I was allergic to vitamin C; it was ironic that I got sick growing up every time my father told me to take vitamin C so I wouldn

I was diagnosed two years ago with non-curable Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. I have flem (or phlegm if you prefer) and the doctors are concerned that the mucus or any other fluids are getting down into my lungs. I have had a 24 hour probe of my esophegus and have a small amount of acid coming up (acid reflux). There is no discomfort from the acid so I am not aware of the reflux. The doctors told me to eliminate dairy, coffee, and alcohol. Which is difficult for me. I admit I am not strict to their prescription. I do not eat or drink dairy, only soy, and I drink tea and an ocasional decaff coffee. What I have learned is that the nose and throat produce mucus/flem when there is irritaion such as (1) dust, (2) acid reflux, (3) or you have alergies to smoething in the air. First of all find out which of these is the what is causing the flem. Do you have alergies (get tested)? You might have "silent acid reflux" like me. Try an antacid for a period. Avoid dairy and try to avoid swallowing that lump in your throat. That flem in your stomach will work its way back up. Caugh it up and blow your nose often. Clearing your throat often isn't bothersome to you but it is to your family and friends. (As if you have a nervous twitch or something:) Do not smoke as it destroys the cillia (little hair-like) in your throat that distributes the natural fluids in your throat. (I haven't smoked in 30 years).
I hope this is a help in understanding flem, at least from my experience, and good luck and have a great life.
