Glad to come across this posting. Have been pounding my head over this problem (and problem it is) for many years now. After lots of reading, I have not found a solid explanation. In my view, doctors have little clue about it. To sum up what has been said above:
1. Tonsil stones - this is one possible explanation. They look similar to the one in the initial picture and also have this horrid smell. However, as reported above, this has proven false in number of cases:
A. Person without tonsils reports it;
B. A number of people report it comes from the nasopharynx (sinus passages).
For the record, this is my case, as well - they go down (I guess from my sinuses), before I can cough them up. I had a case, when I washed them down with saline water trough my nose, so that I can spit them out.
2. They seem more common to people who had chronic sinus infections (like me). This makes me think that this smelly, yellowish (and it does vary in color in my case, as well) bits have different origin. In my view - fungal.
Have anyone had candida infection, persistent or chronic type, as well. What makes me think it is the cause of the matter is this:
A. Candida forms similar in color and smell plaques on mucous membrane.
B. I have noticed that when I eat too much sugar, the occurrence of these smelly bits intensifies (candida feeds on sugar and it is known that it can colonize internal membranes, as well).
C. Last but not least - I have had a whitish, psoriasis-like, plaques on my elbows sometimes (especially if skin is dry). At one point these have become 1x3 cm in form, and unlike psoriasis had not reddishness under or around them. When I started oiling these patches intensively, at one point they just fell off (when I put my elbows on a towel on the beach). To my astonishment, these patches/plaques had the exact same smell, as the balls from my mouth.
Two things that I have noticed ease up the situation - cut drastically on sugar and carbohydrates; and take natural anti-fungal foods like turmeric and ginger (you can find many recipes on the net). Vitamin supplements also help, but I can't judge to what extent. From my perspective - stress and carbohydrates are the main fuel for these smelly balls. And yes, they cause awful bread - even with perfect oral hygiene. Stronger types mouthwash (Iike Lysterine) seem to help reduce the fowl smell. It's been a big, big problem for me in the past.
These are my 2 cents. Anyone with more info or experiences, please comment.

I agree with you on it being yeast, candida, or fungus of some sort. I have this issue. The cure is flagyl. I know because I found out by being treated for something else and i noticed the problem went away. The problem is also bacterial because of the location and food debris. Hope this helps someone. People engaging in oral sex pick this up quite frequently. The doctors don't aknowlegde it either. Nir do they acknowledge flagyl as the cure so the problem continues. But Have known dentist who do and have gotten rid of problem wirh flagyl and Penn V K a form of penicillin.

wonderful!
This is me at the moment, I had blocked sinus with solid black stuff. The pain was unbelievable, I nearly removed my right wisdom teeth. After two week of antibiotics, the signs are that I am coming back to where I started, smelling mucus.
Any more ideas, I will see my GP on the 4th. Your points seems perfect for what am going through. Thank you.

I have had this for about 15 years. It can go on for about a few months and then stop for a year. It works its way out about every 2 to 3 weeks. Gross. It has caused a great deal of anxiety in my life. The substance that comes from my nasal passages is light yellow and very smelly.
I am happy to have found this online. It seems to me that this is a more common problem than people know.
I use a nasal wash in the shower occasionally. I wonder if this is the answer. A tonsillectomy sounds drastic, but perhaps this is the only solution. One person suggested it was a dental issue, but I assured them it was not.
Are there certain foods that do this more? Is drinking more water a solution? Is this substance dangerous at all? Is this the job of the tonsils, to trap substances like this to expel it from the body? I will keep reading on tonsil liths and tonsil stones.
Thank you to SteadyHealth for putting this information up.

These come from the Sinus area....Usually after you have had a Sinus Infection ...I have dealt with Sinusitus my entire life and I am 70 years old. I have recently been able to remedy my Sinus Issues with a Product called Navage that Flushes these from my sinuses every 3 to 6 months. They are Tiny Yellow Globules in color and are the consistancy of a thick paste , you can mush with your finger. These can remain in your sinuses for years causing all sorts of problems , like fever, headaches etc. People like myself who suffer from constant stuffy nose or who need to blow our nose several times a day will often times have these build up in your Sinuses. Simply using Neil Medi Pot will not Flush Them Out...You Need to have a Ear Nose And Throat Specialist Remove Them or Like me ..use Navage Power Nasal Cleanser. I am not advertising for the product...just telling you what I found works to flush these from my Sinuses.
