So you are trying to kick your opiate addiction, huh? Let me tell you - it will not be easy. The best thing that you can do is wean yourself off of the pills, slowly. If you really do have an addiction problem I would suggest talking to counselers or NA. There is a reason you started taking drugs.... A lot of people use Suboxone to get off the opiates, but let me tell you - if you want to save yourself a lot of time, money, and heartache-and WITHDRAWALS, don't take it.
Basically here's the issue. When you take opiates for an extended period of time your body has no reason to make it's own pain killers. You are feeding it enough all of the time, so if you were to try and quit cold turkey - it will take some time for your body to get back to normal. Now - when you take opiates they fill up your opiate receptors with drugs that get you high. Withdrawal from that will be shitty as sh*t for a couple of days, but by about day 4 I felt so much better - actually able to function. However, if you go to a doctor and get SUBOXONE - they will put you on this drug for a minimum of 6 months. Now with subs, they too will fill in your opiate receptors with drugs - but these dont get you high. They also take longer to get our of your system - say if you take them daily for 6 months it would take longer to get out of your body.
So here's your option - if you want to quit drugs and you want to feel OK - then you have a decision to make.
Personally I wanted to get clean - meaning I did not want to be reliant on another drug that acted quite the same as the first (minus the good feeling). I did not want my body to continue to rely on me to fill in my opiate receptors - I just wanted to be done with it all and move on with my life. SO ---
Either you can grin and bear it for a couple of days and be home free in about a week - or you can MAINTAIN WHERE YOU ARE AT FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS - and be faced with the same challange of withdrawals months after being "clean". And it will be even longer of time to go through the W/Ds.
If you are a long time user of opiates - as many are - Subs may be for you. You may need/want many months clean without withdrawals whilst you can talk to counselors and get your head straight. But if you have only been feeding your body the opiates daily for about a year or so - I would first try to kick it on your own.
Just my thoughts - hopefully this helps someone out there...
