Diagnosing eating disorders has always been hard because of the lack of the patients’ willingness to undergo testing and denial that they may be in trouble.

This new hear tests offers results in diagnosing bulimia or anorexia nervosa just by taking no more than five strands of hair per person.

The discovery was published in the journal Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.
The article reports that the new test analyzes the content of carbon and nitrogen in hair.
Eating habits are being recorder in the hair by the body and by analyzing hair, we may tell a lot about the person’s health.

The hair is thought of as a nutritional chemical diary because new proteins are added to the base of each strand as hair grows. What we eat reflects in the proteins.

Researchers who led the study say that by analyzing carbon and nitrogen content in the hair, they are able to detect bulimia or anorexia accurately in 80% of the cases.

The researchers are hoping that they will be able to use this technique to monitor the patients’ progress but more tests are needed before the test will be available to healthcare professionals.
