Woke up to all the same symptoms reddish brown stain on my hands on the palm and around the fingers. I had quesadilla last night and thought lets get fancy and add a mix of pre-sileced green, red and yellow peppers from a tightly sealed container that had been in the fridge. I thought to myself since all plants once picked are in a state of decomposition its probably not good that they are all sealed up tight and percolating in a micro environment bath of bacteria. next day BAM! splotches on my hands. I plan to trick my roommate into handing the same peppers to see if he gets the discoloration. Ps quesadillas were so so.

This might sound odd to you but in my culture (European) and my husbands culture (Middle Eastern) these stains are an indication that you promised someone something or promised to do something for them and it didn't get done.Yes I know it sounds crazy and is probably a myth but it happens alot to family members of mine and his. It's usually on their palms or fingers but can be in other places and it looks like a rusty orange stain that doesn't come off when washing. It's a sign from God to us. It will go away on it's own within a week or so.

Voila! The "red" peppers I've been cutting up! Just my left hand is rusty colored and grab those peppers with my left hand and throw them into the salads I've been making. Also read that kidney beans and tomatoes can cause. Anyone else using lots of red peppers?

Scrub lightly with a vinegar rag. Stains will fade. Will have to do it twice... leave an hour between scrubbings. This discoloration is due to contact with fermented or slightly decomposed fruits or vegetables.... you may not think that your fresh fruits or veggies are “fermented” or “decomposed” but you do have to remember that anything that you buy in the grocery has been picked weeks and weeks earlier and HAS indeed started the decomposed process. The fruit and veg stay fresh and plump due to preservation chemicals.... none the less... the produce is still weeks.. and in some cases months old. The sugars that break down the fiber of the produce also can discolor skin at a certain stage. (Keep in mind that rotting and fermentation are 2 completely different processes of decomposition where the sugars react quite differently to and against the fibers of our produce.) This is not a common occurrence as we usually see the produce pulled from the produce department before it can be purchased. There are few instances that these fruits and vegetables still look “fresh” but are indeed in this stage of decomposition known as fermentation. At this point in decomp fruits obviously smell like wine or vinegar.... we do not tend to eat fermented fruit or veg that has not been purposefully fermented. The purposeful fermentation process used acids... such as vinegar... to neutralize the chemical reactions that the sugar is having on the fibers of our produce; leaving the produce in a state of a sort-of suspended animation... that’s why fermented products have a long shelf life. If these acids are not used and we come into contact with these sugars that are in the fermentation process it can continue the chemical reaction of breaking down the fibers of our skin..... WOW that sounded scary.... skin eating sugars... no! This process is harmless because the fibers that are firstly broken down by these sugars are melanin; our pigment. As these sugars break down a little color in our skin, they cause the by product (the skin blotches) and are spent. It’s like eat+digestion=poop. The sugar causes a chemical reaction, digests a little melanin, and the waste is the rust colored blotches. They are under the skin so they are s little difficult to wash off. Scrub with a little vinegar and VOILA! The blotches dicipate.

Happy Scrubbing!

Ps....This happened to me just this morning.... I am speaking from experience. My culprit was a few fermented pears!

I've read a bunch of post throughout this site. I have been in South Korea for a few weeks now and have eaten a traditional Korean diet for that time 2-3 times a day. I figured it had something to do with this diet as I've also been consuming 10-12 bottles of water a day along with multiple cups of Korean Coffee. What I have notice that it is winter time and a high vegetable diet like the Korean have must be part of or all of the problem. When I read your post it made complete sense that the fermentation you speak of must be the culprit because all of the food in the winter is from small gardens around the area or has been frozen for sometime. Thanks for your post, this is the one that makes the most sense to me in my current situation.

I have the exact same symptoms as you, I drink water, very rarely drink anything else. I can't find anything about this, I can even see where it stops at the bottom of my palms. It'll happen for a week or two and go away, but it comes back every so often...I hate going to the doctors; I'd rather gather as much information as I could before I have to spend money for the doctor to take a bunch of tests on me. I NEED ANSWERS

Orange skin coloring can result from various disorders. One common cause is overeating of dietary items that contain orange-colored beta-carotene (e.g. pumpkins, carrots) and this often causes orange skin from carotenemia in young infants newly introduced to solids. True orange skin color needs to be differentiated from yellow skin (such as jaundice), bronze skin (see hyperpigmentation), red skin, dark skin or other skin color changes; some causes of skin described as "orange" may possibly be listed under these areas.
