I am a doctor. I also experience the same hand and finger pains when I urinate. Not always but when I hold my urine for a while and go latter. Sometimes the pain is really sharp which makes me to shake my hand.

Our brain has something sensory cortex which cover all the body areas for sensation including pain. The hand, forearm and arm have a large area representation. There must cross connection between the hand area and the bladder area in the cortex. So if one part like the bladder is affected the hand also gets the same sensation. So if urine burns the bladder and urethra the hands also get the same burning sensation.

It is called referred pain. Similar to this hand pain is the shoulder pains people get when their gallbladder gets infected. Also finger pains in the left hand when someone having heart attack.

It is not serious but just a perplexing conundrum until someone explains it. Please take a look at this image of the brain which shows the areas represented and notice that a large part of the brain covers the thumb, hand, wrist, forearm and shoulder compared to the rest of the body.

So the pain in the hand we get when we urinate is a referred pain. It does not mean you have cancer or any other serious illness. It is just the way our brain is wired up with some cross connections.

I have had a similar situation, but somewhat different, its only when I pee though. I have had this for more years than I remember. I have asked many many doctors, nurses, and numerous other medical professionals ie: nerve doctors and so on and so forth. I am 60 years of age so you can imagine how many different health care professionals. I have always been told the same thing, hum how strange I have never heard of such thing! My pain is 1st up through the joints of all my fingers, than it will shoot up into my wrist area . but it hurts really bad and it feels likes I need to crack my knuckles, so this must really be rare.. So this probably won't help but you are not the only one. Debi

Thanks so much for answering me. My hands always hurt (tingle, pins and needles, little shock like aches). When I pee the pains just get so much worse. Nobody has an explanation and
certainly no fixes. I'm 81 years old and I don't expect any answers in my life time. Are you
diabetic? Although I'm heavy, I'm not diabetic; but I think the pain is some kind of nueropothy.
Thanks again and stay well..................Ellen

The pain is caused by an over abundance of antidiuretic hormone when you " hold it" it will get worse. Your hands are one of the first places that your body will shunt blood from ADH causes shunting of blood in emergencies, waiting to use the bathroom your body is tricked into thinking there is an emergency and prevents you from fluid loss. When you urinate you have to release acetocholine which is a smooth muscle relaxant. Sphincters are smooth muscles blood flow returning to your fingers the pain is co2 buildup basically same thing when you over work muscles

I thought it was just me. Doctors just tell me the body is very complicated and they do not have an answer. I take Tamsulosin and Cialis. This has helped with going too much but not he pain in the hands.

I called my GYN today and made an apt for next week. I also am having some problems with constipation which is making me bear down to have a bm. This could bed elated somehow.

Hi Brandy, I have the same exact symptoms. The pain gets worse if I've held it for a long time. I am going to the doctor sometime this week. When I get a response, I'll post it on here.

This happens all the time to me when I hold it for too long. I am a 34 y/o female in good health. Every time that I hold it too long. The pain is in my wrist. Also holding it too long leads to bladder infections. Seems like many people experience this when held to long or bladder infection from what I am reading!
