I get these also. It feels like a sort of rapid pull sensation in the chest. A sort of contraction. I get scare because 3 of my grand parents died of heart attacks and my dad had one about a month ago. I havent seen a doctor yet (since my family doctor is 1hour and a half away) and I get scared sometimes and keeps me up a long time at night. It really sucks

Hi all,

I've had this problem from time to time, but once, it lasted for hours. This was about 2 years ago when I was 53 years old (2014). The feeling literally takes your breath away.

I went the the hospital emergency room and the EKG showed that my heart was in AFib (atrial fibrillation). The AFib itself is not life threatening, but while in AFib, a portion of the blood inside your heart does not go anywhere. This is dangerous, especially if you're in AFib for an extended period of time, as the blood inside the heart can coagulate (change to a semi-solid state). When the heart goes back into sinus (normal) rhythm, the coagulated blood will leave your heart. This is very dangerous as the heart will shoot out a clot which can be fatal.

The staff in the ER gave me an injection in the belly that thinned the blood enormously. I was given a medication called Tambocor (the generic name is Flecanide). It is used to restore normal heart rhythm and maintain a regular, steady heartbeat. It took about 30 minutes for the medication to work and bring my heart back into normal sinus rhythm; otherwise, they would have had to shock my heart with a defibrillator. Since then, I've been on this medication (50mg, 2x daily) along with a full aspirin (325mg, 1x daily) as a blood thinner in case it happens again.

Since then, my heart beats on normally, but I do see a cardiologist once a year and the usual tests are run, (stress test, echocardiogram of the heart, and a 24 hour holter monitor).

I hope this information is helpful.

Look up Wolff Parkinsons White syndrome. Its most common in teenagers, if you think this is it, you should have it checked.
