I've noticed my blood sugar is always higher in the morning. I do what my doctor said to do and have a snack before bed of one protein and two carbs and am wondering if I shouldn't eat it. For the rest of the day, my bs stays steady. Does anyone else have the problem? Do you know what the cause is or how to fix it, or is it something that can't be fixed and just is? Does my bedtime insulin need to be adjusted?

If your blood sugar level is too high in the morning, what's probably happening is that your before bedtime dose of insulin needs adjusting. You also might be eating too late in the evening. Your bedtime snack should come no later than two hours before bedtime. So if you go to bed at 10p, you should eat your snack around 8p. If you are eating your snack on time and your blood sugar is still too high, consult your doctor. Very often you need just a unit or two more of insulin at night.

Your insulin probably needs to be adjusted. Mine did that for a while too. My doctor said that I should still eat my bedtime snack in case my sugar would drop during the night. He said that it was better that it be a little higher in the morning than for it to drop while I'm sleeping and have trouble waking up or having my sugar bottom out. Talk to your doctor about adjusting the your sliding scale. It probably only needs to be increased by one or two units. If this is a new development, make sure you mention that to your doctor too.
