I would like to begin my swimming season a bit earlier this year. Since the sea is not that warm at this time of the year I can expect chills and shivering while entering the water. I wonder how long it takes to adapt to cold water. Is it safe to swim this way?

Well, it depends on your physical form, and other factors. But on average, several minutes are more than enough to adapt to cold water provided that you immediately start swim vigorously. The best way is to immerse slowly. Legs first, then abdomen, torso and when your neck is in the water you will start to swim. Give yourself some 5-10 minutes to immerse in the water. That way, your body will be ready and the transition to the colder environment will be easy.
