I have. I prefer to try them on first, as it seems to me that there are idiosyncrasies between different pairs of shoes in the same model. I personally think you're better off going to the local running store.
I am also guessing your wife does not run (nothing wrong with that, but it explains why she wants you to wait). There is definitely nothing wrong with a little cost/benefit analysis regarding old shoes = expensive, possibly debilitating injuries vs. new shoes = initial expense but long term expense due to injuries.
I have had more than a few injuries trying to budget expenses/not buying new shoes whe needed and ended up laying out much more total than I would had I just got the new shoes.

I support my loca running mecca all the time, but they don't carry enought triathlon related apperal and then order by mail on those.

Another newbie to the site here, but I've been running for awhile.
The only shoes I buy anymore are Asics, and I can generally get about 500 to 600 miles on a pair. My legs tell me when they are getting near the end of their use ... tightness, etc. Then I change them out.
Regarding RRS, I only buy apparel from the site. I have found with shoes, especially Asics, that sizes are really inconsistent between different pairs. If a pair ordered from RRS doesn't fit quite right, it's a total hassle having to return them. So I prefer to support the local running store.
Just wanted to add my 2-cents to the discussion.
