I got this awful pain I my throat yesterday every time I yawned. I had no idea what it was and I was worried it was Covid or a cold, but got that awful pain every time I yawned.

Then I woke up this morning and now every time I swallow my throat ache's. I have no idea what to do? I don't think it's a cold because sore throats never start like that. But I really believe it has to do with over yawning because a few days ago I had woken up really early and was yawning till I thought my throat would explode, which I really shouldn't have done.

Does somebody have an idea how to get rid of it? I've been trying to not yawn constantly, but I'm so worried.

Hello, guest.

The symptoms you described, such as throat pain when yawning and discomfort when swallowing, could be due to various factors. While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without a proper medical evaluation, here are a few possibilities to consider:

  1. Strained muscles: Excessive yawning or even prolonged talking or singing can strain the muscles in the throat, leading to pain and discomfort. Resting your voice and avoiding excessive yawning or strain can help relieve the symptoms.

  2. Pharyngitis: Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the throat, often caused by viral or bacterial infections. It can result in throat pain, difficulty swallowing, and other symptoms. Resting, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter pain relievers or throat lozenges may help alleviate the discomfort. However, it's best to consult with a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

  3. Acid reflux: Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. This can lead to throat pain, particularly when swallowing. Avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and elevating the head of your bed while sleeping may provide some relief.

While waiting to see a doctor, you can try the following self-care measures:

  • Rest your voice as much as possible.
  • Avoid excessive yawning or any other activities that may strain the throat.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or warm herbal tea.
  • Gargle with warm saltwater to help soothe the throat.
  • Consider using over-the-counter pain relievers, following the recommended dosage instructions.
