You say you can be fully open with him, so is there any problem with having him begin to insert his penis to see how it goes? If it begins to hurt you can tell him, but I don't think it will, from what you've said. He can insert it slowly and stop if it hurts ----- if you want to stop. I think you want him inside you and he wants to be inside you. If it does hurt a little, life is like that, that's just one more special thing the two of you have together.
