Hi, a few days ago, I went to a routine gynecological exam, and I found out that I have a bacterial vaginitis. I would like to know a little more about this inflammation, and how to prevent it in the future.

Hello, I had bacterial vaginitis two times. Both times I went to doctor because I noticed the symptoms myself. Besides itching and burning, I noticed that secretions were different. You have to listen to your body, because it is the best way to notice on time if there’s anything wrong. In my case, a bacterial vaginitis was caused by overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria. It is also the most common cause in women patients. There are things you should do if you want to prevent bacterial vaginitis in the future. First, you should keep the vaginal area clean and dry, wear cotton underwear, avoid strong soaps, and do not leave tampons in the vagina for long periods.

Could it be it's very moist down there, like me I like to go commando, so that means NO panties. I guess that's not a good idea given the circumstances.

I also found that the condom company that makes the condoms called; ONE has a lubricant on it that caused a burning and very painful feeling on the inside of my vagina as well as on the hood of my clit, around the vagina.

Only 2 lubricants also caused the same painful issue and some itching and the pain from another product that you use in the shower called Vagisil, I also have it as a powder for odor and a cream for the itching and the pain.

I get these about 2-3 times a year. My gyno said that there is nothing more I could do to prevent it. She said some women are just prone to them. Which sucks because the medicines are like $65 and thats using my insurance. The joys of being a woman.hahaha.

I've suffered with this problem for almost ten years off/on. Currently have it now, I've tried showering more, cotton panties, urinating before and after sex and nothing works. I've tried changing my underwear at work after 4 hours of work just to try and deter the odor. I wear pantyliners everyday now. Someone told me that rephresh works to maintain the ph balance of the vagina, I havent tried it. I'm in the gyne office every 2 mos. Do anyone have any other info that might help. :'(

Hello, I get bacterial infections alot also...and in turn do the antibiotics. But I have found that when i stop using Replense (not Rephrese, which actually does not help)feminine moisturizer, the bacterial problems come back. So I do recommend everyone who suffers from BV to try that, you can usually also get samples from your doctor/gyno sometimes.

I was not aware that there would be adifference between the two. Can you tell me which is which and what the active ingredients are? Thanks!

I get these often especially since I have an IUD in for birth control. My OBGYN gave me a prescription for Boric Acid Suppositories which can be filled at a compounding pharmacy. I am to insert 2 every Sunday. I haven't been doing good with using them so I can't say it works yet :-( But I will try to start using them and leave another comment on it.

Walked into my gyno this morning for my yearly check up, happy go lucky, thinking that i have nothing to worry about, i havent been sexually active in a long time..  and then my gyno comes back in the room to let me know that i have a vaginal bacterial infection. now i was more happy that it was not a bigger issue with my little treasure box down below. any who after her explaining to me about what it was and why it happened she gave me a brochure that listed some prevention. here they are:
the following prevention tips are only suggestions, experiment to determine which ones work for you the best....
Don't use antibacterial, deodorant, oil based, or perfumed soaps in the vaginal area, always wipe from front to back after urinating or having a bowl movement (haha, learned that one in kindergarten),
don't use colored or perfumed toilet paper, Urinate before and after intercourse,
don't use talcum powder or feminine hygiene sprays, don't use bubble bath, oils Landry soap, or dish detergent in bath water, don't wash or condition your hair while you are sitting in the bathtub (taking a bath),
don't use deodorize or scented pads or tampons, make sure your vaginal is well lubricated during intercourse- if you wish to add lubricants use a water based lubricant such as astrogel.. lubrin..or rplens,
douching is not necessary for cleanliness,
when the whether is warm, use a hairdryer-set on cool- to dry the vaginal area after you bathe,
Don't use petroleum-based jelly in vaginal area
Wear white, 100% cotton underwear, cotton lining in the crotch is not enough
don't wear underwear to bed
avoid wearing tight pants, especially those made of synthetic materials.
if you must wear pantihose, wear those with a cotton crotch or remove the triangular panel in the crotch (for maximum air circulation).
Avoid wearing long underwear and tights, thses can trap in body heat.
change from your wet bathing suit right awway!!!
DO NOT USE A FRABIC SOFTENER OR  DRYER SHEETS WHEN WASHING AND DRYING YOUR UNDERWEAR!!! (this one got me red handed)
WASH YOUR UNDERWEAR IN HOT WATER!! (SEPARETLY FROM OTHER CLOTHING) AND USE A PERFUME(odor free) FREE DETERGENT!
i hope this will help some of you out there searching for answers.

those are some great tips! thank you, thank you! I'm on round 2 of this stupid infection and it takes WEEKS to clear it up,yes that is using the antibiotics. Something I found that helps, too is if you need medication ask for the vaginal cream instead of the pill form,Allot of times if you are on medication it might cause a yeast infection then you will start the vicious cycle all over again only adding to your frustration! Good luck gals, seems like allot of us suffer.:(
