a friend of mine just found out she has HPV in mild form...she's worried and talked to me about it, but I know nothing to tell her...how long could it be in your system, etc?

the best thing you can do for your friend is just be there for her as a listener and supporter when in need. hpv can be different for many people and she will most probably have to be close in contact with her doctor while treating the virus. many people have recurring infection and it may clear up, after treatment through freezing off any visible warts, but the virus does lay dormant in the body forever and can lead to infertility and cervical cancer as you probably seen on commercials, especially if not properly treated by her healthcare provider. she needs to refrain from sex, practice safe sex, and approach this matter very cautiously during this time. many people, after not having an outbreak for a certain amount of time, never get it again. this is the most important time for her to take care of herself as best as possible and get proper treatment to reduce any future complications.
and remember std's are passed from skin to skin contact. it is important for her to not share personal products such as towels or razors that may touch the area and pass on to someone else and to wash her hands after touching the infected area. but like i said most importantly, be a friend to her, be there for her, and do not treat her as if she has the plague.
take care
