Hello everyone, I very recently had my septate hymen removed and I have decided to share my story with you all because before I had the surgery I wanted to know the details of it and how it all happened. So here goes!

Firstly I am 17 (from UK- so procedure done on NHS) and have not had sex yet, I discovered there was something wrong  down there when I was using a tampon and it kept on getting stuck on a piece of skin when I was removing it. I was so worried to tell my mum as it was embarssing, but I thought if I want this to be solved that was what I needed to do. When I told her she said that we can go to the doctors and get it checked out.

So I went to my local doctors and had a woman check me out down there to see exactly what it was- she clarified it was a septate hymen and said that I should go to a gynocolagist to have a further consultation. This took quite a while for an appointment to be arranged but finally I went and had a male gyno examine me.

We came to the conclusion of having surgery to remove it which I was told is very quick involves a few snips of the access skin.

When finally the day came to have it removed I was extremely nervous as I had not had a general anaesthetic (being put under). Anyway i was taken into the anaesthetic room and they gave me an injection through my hand and some gas through a mask to calm me down. At first I felt a little dizzy and it felt abit like being drunk!! Before I knew it I was asleep and next minute I knew I was in the recovery room. I had to ask the nurse if it was done because it felt as if no time had passed- very odd feeling. I had no pain at this point I just felt a little drowsy. I was then taken into the ward to rest for a little longer. The surgery was only around 30 minutes so very quick and was allowed to leave the same day!

There was some bleeding it was as if I was on the first day of my period so I just put a sanitary pad in my pants. The nurse said the bleeding will ease off over the next two days.

There was minimal pain it was just a little sore down there as expected but nothing major! I was told not to use tampons for my next period too because it still may be a little sore.

Anyway I'm on day two of recovery and everything is fine, I am so so glad I had this done it will make my life a lot easier I am sure and it's great to get it out of the way.

Hope this helps anyone that is thinking about surgery or has septate hymen and isn't sure what to do. Feel free to ask questions! Thanks xx

Hi teen101. I know I'm male lol but just wanted to say a big thanks to you for writing in and telling you story of how your Hymenectomy operation went as I'm sure it will be of great help to others with the same condition in the future. He you could all so keep posting updates on how your doing and how long it takes to get back to normal that would be great :-)

Thanks for sharing, this is something I've been putting off for many many years. I think I'm not nervous about the actual procedure it's just showing people I'm embarrassed about. I was scared the gp will want to see there and then.... I guess that fear is true! :(

See your doctor like the original poster did. That's the only thing you can do.

I think I have an imperforate hymen and I’m absolutely terrified, I’ve been aware there’s something wrong for years and always pushed it to the back of my mind. I’m 17 now and really don’t know what to do as I’m too scared to book an appointment

What makes you think it's inperforated, do you have your periods as normal?

I’m 16 and I am going to get mine checked out next week. I noticed or predicted I had it when I had trouble taking tampons out. I’m really scared that I’m going to a gynocologist for the first time, but I’m happy that you told us your story. I feel more relaxed about the situation now.

i am a 16 year old girl and i’ve know i’ve had this for years when i first got my period at 14 and i wanted to go swimming with my friends and used a tampon after swimming i tried to change my tampon and could not get it out to save my life i had the exact problem you had and it was horrible pain but finally just pulled it out and after that i’ve tried to but just gave up because it clearly wasn’t working i had researched so much and figured out what i had. i now play tennis for school and it started hurting down there because i figured my hymen was trying to break because that can happen to some girls when they play sports. i’ve dated my boyfriend for two years now and we wanted to start being sexually active but i know there is no way until i have surgery so finally after getting on my mom forever i got her to set me up an appointment and today i went and i was so so scared because i’ve read and watched videos about how they examine and i was terrified if i was different from everyone else and it could not be fixed. so i went in today and i told the girl about all my symptoms she already had made up her mind that it was not that i could tell by her words and actions and when she got down there and put her finger in i told her how badly it hurt and it was so uncomfortable i told her how i seen skin on the tampon when taking it out and how when i would check myself i could put my finger more into the left side then right and that the left side was much larger so when she went in to check it automatically when it to the right side and she never went and tried to push in on the left to feel of see another hole like i have felt and i just feel she put the clamp in all wrong as if she only put it on the left side because she could get it on the left and i told her how i could hook the band of skin in the middle and it’s just like it went over her head. so after it got to much painful she took out the clamp and said she wasn’t able to find what she was looking for because i was getting to small back there and she told me that i should just use extra small tampons but what she dosent understand is if it hurts very badly to even stick my finger in there how would i ever lose my virginity it would be horrible pain and i would never enjoy it. i just want someone to understand what i’m going through because i’m very insecure and depressed because i’m different than all my friends. thank you

Hi! Really good to hear this story. One question: when you say it took a while to get an appointment with a gynaecologist, how long are we talking here? Thanks x
