This is exactly what I have. I used to run on trails and fell hard several times. Now years later this pain is a mystery. Did you get a name for this? Or treatment? Mine is mostly when I’m in bed. M

I have same sensation of carpet burn just above my left knee cap BUT I had caught myself when I was tripping over a rolled-up carpet. I jarred my knee by the movement made to save myself. I felt it right away but the burning sensation began hours later and the area over the burning turned red & I can feel a lump. Strained something over the kneecap I think. I hope all are ok now as it's been over a year since people chimed in here...I'm going RICE and took arnica right way internally & also used arnica gel. It's 3 days later and it's better.

So surprised by the lack of diagnosis after so many replies! I too have bilateral burning/stinging sensation around my lower knees. Pain only happens when legs are bent and pressure is put on them (about inch below knee cap and to outside of leg), like when climbing into bed or kneeling down. Going to see a neurologist on referral after primary care doctor wasn’t sure what was causing the pain.

I have the same problem was hoping to find relief. I think some of those that commented may be correct in diagnosing it as saphenous neuralgia of the knee (intrapatellar saphenous neuralgia). I recently saw an orthopedist and had x-rays and an MRI done. Neither showed anything wrong and the dr. was unable to give a definite diagnosis but thought it might have to do with nerve damage that was caused by kneeling on a tile floor. I avoid kneeling and only wear stretch pants, not jeans. Was the neurologist able to help you?

"guest" on page 10 of this thread figured it out. "variant of infrapetellar saphenous neuritis." I read all 16 pages and the vast majority of people have what he describes as infrapetellar saphenous neuritis. Sounds like a few people have IT band problem that can be fixed by rolling back in forth over a foam roller on the outer thigh from knee to hip, but that's a different issue all together.

Forgot to add, I'm experiencing this presently and personally don't know how to fix this, Seems like I had an episode of this years ago and it went away for a long time, so it should be fixable. Plan to keep an eye out for repeated actions that cause me to lean on that saphenous nerve, and stop doing those.

I've done so much googling and it looks like I finally found ppl who get what I was trying to search.... All explained here exactly as it feels for me ... I've been doing hiit and do some rolling on the knees during some modification excersises for core etc. I thought maybe it was like a rug burn from my yoga mat...like one that happens underneath the skin bc I've never felt anything like this before and it was the closest I could relate too. It's mostly only when I stretch is or kneel on it...today a couple times it has happened from my pants rubbing on it. So I'll take tomorrow off from any hiit. Hoping for more answers...and speeding healing to all!
It's always a relief to know I'm not alone in something, of course I'd not wish anyone else to have feel this either.

I have had this problem intermittently for over twenty years. I am pretty sure that it was caused by a decade of working as an aircraft radio mechanic kneeling on hard hangar floors to access antennas under helicopters. I get the burning in the skin just under the patellas of both knees and it usually only lasts for a few days and then stops but I have been getting it in my right knee for a couple of months now (getting old!.
I have just read through this thread and I think that there is some misunderstanding from some people who may be suffering from something else as I am pretty sure that it is not related to the actual joint, ligament or muscle. But most people have described exactly what I have. Most of the time, there is no pain but I only have to brush against a cushion and it is agony - and I usually have a pretty high pain tolerance - and my partner wonders why I just yelled out loud for no apparent reason.
I had thought it might be prepatella bursitis but when I saw photos of huge swollen knees, I thought otherwise - my knees look as if there is nothing wrong with them and I actually find it difficult to locate the exact spot because it is so small.
I am sort of glad that I have finally discovered other people who have it as I thought I was going insane with people being unable to understand the invisible problem - my partner bought me some knee pads not realising that they would probably make it worse.
Anyway, I found a few things on here to look up so I have a bit of reading to do.

I wish someone knew what this is. I started having the same thing this week on the side of my right knee and had no way to describe it, as it’s not a skinned knee and it’s not inside the knee. It’s exactly like a rug burn when I kneel. I don’t notice it all until kneeling on that knee. It feels like I’m kneeling down on an object or something I didn’t see. Can’t feel it at all when I touch it.
