i wish that someone would answer this also. my problem is quite similar. As i start to get in or out of the bed, if i brush or slide the right side of my leg just above the knee cap on the right hand side, I feel a burning sensation. Other wise I can beat on it, rub it , or hit on it and there is no paIn. please reply

I have the same pain however it will move from one knee to another. I have had 5 low spine back surgeries with nerve damage. My pain management dr said it is from an hyper excited nerve. In my case he thinks its pinching in my s1 area of my spine causing it. However I have many weird sensations from it.. So think if u have any back or buttock to foot ankle area pain may have tweeked your back causeing pressure on your nerve it ends in the exact spot on the knee where the pain is... Hope this helps.

I am gravitating towards prepatellar bursitis. My pain is only when I kneel on my right knee or when I touch what feels like a worm that is under the skin, but on top of my knee cap. It started in the last week or so. I spent a lot of time on my knees repairing my floor recently and figure I must have aggravated something. Whatever it is, it rolls around under my finger when I touch it and burns like crazy when I apply even just a little pressure or kneel on it, but the pain fades quickly and doesn't bother me otherwise. I'm hoping a little time, rest and maybe ice will do it some good. Good luck!

I tend to agree with you with the nerve damage caused by a hard fall directly on th knee. I took a fall around a week ago and knee area is black n blue and driving me crazy now with this burning sensation, not constant but enough to cause my slep to be interrupted many times throughout the night. Waiting to see if it gets better by itself or if I need to go get a shot of sorts as you mentioned.

Same here. I started feeling it a month ago. The first time I felt it, I thought I had cut my knee. I checked for a wound and there was none. It kept happening at random moments, sometime in bed just before sleep. I can't pin down a pattern of movements that might trigger it. For me, it smarts like a wound.

Why is the &^%$#&( moderator deleting where to find answers - it's the whole point of the post, but then someone says look here and there's nothing because the moderator deletes it - how can this make sense. da

I also have a spot on the outside of my left knee area that gives an immediate feeling of carpet burn if rubbed against something (i.e. when i get into bed, on my pants...). The spot is about 1 to 2 cm in diameter. If i move the tip of my finger very gently over the spot it is as if I don't have any feeling there, on the skin. If I press hard on the spot, the bone underneath seems sensitive (maybe just because I'm pressing it so much as I try to figure out what this new sensation is).
I don't have a clue what it is, but I imagine it is related to nerves. I'll see my doctor about it in a few weeks if it doesn't improve and i'll write back here with what she has to say.

I may have figured this problem out for my case...
I came across this page a few days ago because I have these exact symptoms. Just below and to the left of my left kneecap; if the skin is stretched I feel a rugburn sensation in the skin (not the joints, tendons or whatever -- just the skin.) If I lightly touch the area it is numb. When the leg is held out straight it feels okay to pull the skin. If my knee is bent then it's painful to pull the skin. Bedsheets, pants, anything that pulls the skin slightly makes it feel like a scab is being torn off. This conditions waxes and wanes periodically.
Today on my commute to work I realized, for the first time, that my left knee rests against the driver door at the exact spot. My left arm rest on my leg (which acts like a prop for my arm to hold the steering wheel) applying even more pressure on the knee against the door. I have commuted 2 hours per day in this vehicle for the last 5 years. While in this position there is no knee discomfort. This habitual way of sitting in the car is automatic. Even after realizing that my knee is pushed against the driver door this way, 10 minutes later I was right back to doing it without thinking. I'm certain that, in my case, I've developed some nerve damage in my knee from roughly 2,000 hours of propping my leg against the driver's door. I'm surprised that I didn't discover this sooner. I think I only recently became concerned enough to pay attention to my knee in normal situations. While I can't speak for anyone else in this forum it would be interesting to know if those of you who experience it in the RIGHT knee only commute in cars with right-hand steering.

I went to my Dr with this same issue and he told me it was neropathy along with my fybromyalgia. I am going to ask my pain Dr if I can get Lidocane patches. I know a botox injection helps. You dont have to be a diabetic to have neropathy.

I have the same severe burning/stinging sensation (about 7 on a scale of 10) where the peroneous longus and the tibialis anterior muscles meet at the tip of the extensor digitorum longus muscle (I consulted a diagram of leg muscles on the web) about an inch below the kneecap. The pain shoots several inches down the muscle. The pain occurs if, when kneeling, I happen to put my weight where those muscles intersect, and the pain continues for about 5 seconds after I've changed my position. The pain feels subcutaneous. The epidermis feels numb in that region of my leg.
