I have developed the exact same problem in the past week.  I feel like there should be an abrasion to my skin, but there is nothing external.

I get a similar knee or shin pain occasionally after doing an exercise on my knees/shins. it usually lasts for a couple of weeks. is very sensitive to touch, and i cannot kneel on it. but it does go away eventually, with no treatment. I'm wondering if this is what it is:

I also have this. No trauma to knee at all that I remember.  I first started with a burning pain in the shower when the water ran over it like it was brushed burned. The skin in the exact area felt rough. I daily apply coconut oil and it does not seem to soften it. The past week when I kneel on the knee I feel the sensation of burning in the knee  and the side where this rough skin is....

What is the nerve?

I have the same thing on my right knee. Developed it about 2 months or so ago. I tried what you said about stretching the skin and that is exactly my symtom. Getting in the car when my pant leg stretches against the skin, it's like rubbing a carpet burn and getting more painful. Since it's my right leg, your thoughts of repeated "trauma" (resting against the door) don't apply. I noticed there is a vein that looks like it runs in the area of discomfort, but still can't put my foot on it. And I agree with one of the posters. We all seem to have similar syptoms, but there is no suggested diagonise or suggested relief. Seems we know what we got, but not how to fix it.

After reading all these comments and having my own similar issues over the years, it seem like there could be a very simple and common explanation. Nerve damage or pinching caused from a fall or bad posture or maybe repetitive injury. You must realize when concerning the nervous system, symptoms in one location can be caused by an injury in another location....for example numb burning knee skin could be caused by a pinched nerve in the hip area, along the spinal cord or up in the neck. So a simple trip or fall and you caught yourself with your hand could have slightly jarred a bone in the spine causing a slight pinch of a nerve. This pinch, not being major, is just enough to cause nerve irritation somewhere along its length. So...I would suggest describing all the symptoms and events leading up to the symptoms to a trusted, licensed professional chiropractor, acupuncturist, or maybe a sports medicine massage therepist. Slight mechanical nerve issues are these professionals expertise and they can provide many different options for help. At least the have to me over the past years.

I am the guest who posted on 2013-09-30. I suspected that my case was due to resting my knee on the driver door while commuting (2 hrs per day.) I forced myself to NOT rest my knee there during the following weeks and voila! The symptoms slowly receded. Today my knee is fine. Incidentally, a Google search on this revealed one other person suspecting the same for their case but they have not posted a follow-up.

COMFREY ROOT and leaf SALVE works.  I have developed the same problem in both knees. I'm active, 55 and pride myself in being healthy.  I doctor myself with natural medicine, like my family has for generations -- they are from mississippi and new orleans.  I am in california where we have access to a wide range of natural healing ingredients.  I bought a comfrey leaf salve from a local natural store.  I then bought comfrey root (from a bulk herb store)  and ground it up in my coffee grinder until it was in powder form.  I mixed that with the leaf salve. I applied it generously to the affected area at least 3x a day. You may want to wrap the area in a woolen or cotton cloth/bandage to prevent staining to your clothes and to insulate the medicine.   It is 2 days later, the burning/pain sensation had severely lessened.  Now I am on my third day, I will post back in another week.  FYI, I did try other remedies and researched what the problem could be and I came to the conclusion that it was a nerve issue as some of the other posters did also.  One of comfrey's medicinal properties is to help repair breaks, sprains, muscle strains, ligaments, tissue damage, etc.  -- google for more.

I have recently developed the same symptoms that have been reported on here, and I have noticed it when my jeans rub on my knee when I sit down.  I too kept looking at my knee to see if it was abraded.  I recently started an amped up workout routine to prepare for a marathon, and had to do some maintenance on my car where I had to get on the garage floor and back up and back down etc.  I have always found it exceedingly uncomfortable on my knees, but the car thing was necessary.  I thought that my knee might have found some slivers of broken glass or something.  Now I am thinking it might me intrapatellar bursitis, from the location of the burning (below my knee).

I'm so glad I found this site! I thought I was going crazy! I've been to the doctor and had x-rays but nothing has ever shown up. I had it a year ago in my left knee. That got better and now I have it in my right knee. I wish I could find out the difinitive answer as to what it is and how to treat it. The pain can get pretty intense especially if I forget and have to kneel down. Does anyone have the answer?
