I am 19 years old and I just had my surgery Friday morning. It is now 5:40am on Wednesday morning and I am in the greatest amount of pain I have ever been in. I am taking my Liquid Lortab, which helped alot at first, but now does not do anything. I literally feel like I'm going crazy. I need someone to tell me that it will get better soon, because I truly don't know how much longer I can last. The majority of my pain is throat pain when I try to swallow. I have had strep throat before but that was nothing compared to this. Please help me.

Eating and drinking will totally make you feel better. It may be hard but it coats the stomach so that the medicine doesn't make your stomach and your head hurt. Plus, eating and drinking will work the muscles in the back of your throat that are otherwise dormant and need to be stretched. I am also 19 and on my 6th day of recovery and it's hard in the mornings but it's getting better. I don't know when I'll be fully recovered but hopefully soon.

I'm 18 and had my tonsillectomy six days ago...I thought I'd go to school today but after realizing how much pain I'm still in...decided against it. The pain has steadily gotten worse each day since surgery and the Lortab makes me tired and crabby. I've lost thirteen pounds in six days and it feels like theres a war going on in my stomach. I am so frustrated and sore...when will it be over???? :'(

I am 36 yr old and had my tolnsils removed friday am. It is now wed pm and the the best advice i can give is drink water constantly. I found the lortab liquid med to help me sleep more than to relieve the pain, the pain seems to be a constant, but drink water. I am drinking around a half gallon a day. I had severely infected tonsils was surprised at how large the holes are in the back of my throat. I have also been gargling with warm salt water which seems to be helping the discomfort. But more than any, drink water. Hydration is the key as best as I can tell. And warm chicken broth (organic seems to have less sodium) is rather soothing on the throat as well. Hope this helps someone :)

Thats what he is going through and we are wondering the same thing. Pain meds. didn't work for him. He feels like he is going crazy, too. He is on his fourth day. He says the pain is unbearable. He can't sleep, eat, talk, or swallow. Have you tried gargoling warm salt water? Has your scabes fallen off? I know it will get better soon, but when? I hope by the fifth or sixth day. Every time we try something new we hope this will work but it does not. He says the only thing he can eat is pudding. That seems to be working, for now. So maybe you can give us some advice. :'(

I'm 18 years old and I got my surgery done at 7:30 and 7 days ago.
The first day was fine, I could speak, eat, everything. The surgeon group I went to sends people home the first day, so thats where I headed.
By the end of the night I was regretting pushing myself so hard and went through my first dose of pain.
By the next morning I had felt better again, I was able to talk, swallow, and even ate. By 12 that day I was vomiting up everything I had eaten.
I was on perk. which I was allergic to, and instead switched to Vic.
Day three was horrible, I slept as much as possible. I had no idea that the pain would be as bad as it was. I was taking pain killer after pain killer and nothing was working.
Day four I went to the hospital where I was pumped with 2000 ml of fluid and given the most heavenly shot. I arrived home that evening and was able to drink and eat. The shot had helped so much, I thought that this would be the turning point.
Day five I once again went back to horrible pain, it was just unbearable. All I could get down was water and chicken broth, nothing else would go.
Day six I woke up vomiting and shaking, went back to my doctor. He took me off all of my medicine, I couldn't walk, I was literally detoxing from all the drugs I had taken. I passed out about 10 times and finally got home after being diagnosed with thrush and given all new drugs.
After detoxing for the rest of the evening I laid myself in for a sleepless night. The ear pain was horrible and the only thing that I've found to help was some Motrin.
Day seven. The morning was once again unbearable but as the day has moved on my ear pain has calmed down, and hopefully left for good. I'm on a gargle for my thresh, liquid Tylenol for pain, amox., and a numbing mouthwash called magic swizzle. I've managed to get two icepops down and some broth, today is the first day that I'm starving. Unfortunately I still can not get pudding or jello down.
My birthday is in two days...when will this end?!?!

I am a 18 yr old male and i had a tonsillectomy performed on May 13, 2009.
I am currently on my 3rd day of recovery (including the say of surgery)
My Otolaryngologist prescribed me Tylenol 3, antibiotics, prednisone (steroid anti inflammatory) and a xylocaine local anesthetic mouth rise.
After hearing stories on the net i played it safe and took tylenol 3 about every 4 hours so my liver never gets the chance to eliminate the drugs from my system.
The pain will probably hit me hard in the next 3 days or so, but this surgery is well worth it as i had bacterial tonsillitis once every 30-40 days.
I have had peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) a couple of times which developed right behind my tonsils. The pain was horrid and 2 500mg tylenol had absolutely no effect on the pain. Drinking a sip was water gave a sharp painful pain which takes about 10 seconds for me to fully grasps what i just went through.
Im just hoping the next 3 days of recovery will be about the same or better then the pain i got from a peritonsillar abscess, so i wont get any surprises.
A good tip is to set your alarm clock at night to wake you up every 4 hours to take your pain meds and while your at it, spend 10 mins downing as much water (yet slowly) as you can. This helps with the morning pain some of you experienced becuase when we sleep we tend to use our mouth to breathe which can dry our mucous membrane around the tonsil pits causing pain in the morning.
One more note, i have experienced a sort of wet cough in the morning. The feeling you get when you come down with upper respiratory infections. The cough that produces slightly thick sputum. After coughing as lightly as i can (to prevent bleeding) i did a bit of examining of the sputum in my sink and they had a slight brown/red tint to it. This probably means blood. I hypothesis that during sleep, a slight amount of blood is leaking into my trachea.
I also noticed that when i dirnk liquids, they tend to slid down my throat uncontrollably. Im assuming the soft palate and the swollen is still a little weak which prevents it from closing properly when i drink liquids. Quite irritating because when i drink water, it might go down my trachea as well.
GOOD LUCK!!

I'm 30 years old and got my tonsils removed on Tuesday. Today is Sunday. After waking up from surgery, I could swallow, but it was very painful, I'm not gonna lie. Talking was mildly difficult but I could manage it. Now it hurts like heck to talk and I mean even talking at a whisper is painful. My ears are aching like I've never experienced before and my childhood has been riddled with ear infections. When they first started hurting, I found that the pain eased up almost instantaneously by applying gently pressure to my neck where my tonsils had once been. This has now stopped working so efficiently. This morning I woke up in utter pain (that could be because I talked more than I should have last night. Oops. Dang friends being a bad influence getting me to hang out and play wii. LOL.) The pain in my ears has finally gone away after two hours and I think that just sitting here stoically listening to the sound of the fan has helped tremendously. I'm not a jell-o fan but I tell you what, it goes down so much easier than other stuff. Note: If you buy pudding, you might not want to refrigerate it. It loses a lot of its softness and becomes less appealing. Or if you do refrigerate it, when you want some, take it out and let it sit in room temperature for a while. Mac and Cheese has been my new best friend during this along with Homestyle and regular Chicken Noodle Soup. God love them, I've lost 10 pounds, but that's not by choice, though it is lovely. The mac and cheese fills up decently and if that doesn't cut it, an additional bowl of chicken noodle soup will.

I'm 39 and just had a tonsillectomy and a UPPP on 8/31. The pain has not been nearly as bad as I expected, but that seems to be entirely from drink excessive amounts of water. You DO NOT want to dry out and scab at all, that's where bleeding and pain come in. Keeping hydrated keeps the tissue elasticized and moist. After my fourth day I got off of the pain meds, and had moved up to oatmeal and mac and cheese. REMEMBER, ONLY WATER counts towards your fluid intake!! Don't assume broth or other "wet" foods are hydrating you.
My only complaint, and warning, comes from the pain meds I was prescribed. They gave me Hydromorphone, which made me loopy, but didn't kill my discomfort, however, it did constipate me tremendously. If you are prescribed a narcotic pain med, they should tell you to take Colace, as well. The pain I am going through STILL dealing with a blockage is worse than anything from the surgery!

Thanks for the tips on keeping your scabs hydrated and how you're doing. PLease let me know how things are going! IT sounds like it's been early three weeks. Are you back to normal now?

I'm the 39 y/o who had the surgery on 8/31, and I'm completely fine now. I still cut back a bit on dairy, have avoided alcohol, and any food with sharp edges. I had my post-op on 9/17, and he said I could start light exercise (today, actually), and said that I'm healing nicely, but still a little swollen. No biggie, and he's very optimistic. I haven't had any pain, except for the constipation issues....which I had to go to the ER for, and they gave me Miralax....awesomely effective stuff!

I am glad to hear that you are doing well then! Thanks for posting on that and also, just out of curiosity, did you lose your sense of taste at any point? Someone else is posting that they're worried about that. Thanks!

I am 17 years old and i had my surgery 6 days ago and i took Tylenol3 with kodine for the first 5 days and now it barely hurts to swallow, its still swollen and inflamed, but its definitely far better then the first few days even with the prescription drugs. What is most likely happening to you is (sounds gross) the scabs in the back of your throat are falling off (which is a good thing, it means you are healing) and that means pain for about 3 more days. Eat as often as you can and drink lots of water to keep your throat clean and avoid infections.
