I've been 80 lbs since i was 16, i'm now 25. Before i was 15 i stayed at 50 lbs
Think of the people that can look at a carrot and gain 20 lbs, well we have the same problem in reverse...
No matter how hard i've tried, i can never gain weight.
Sorry but your comment hit a sore spot, Ashley and I have a problem that no amount of food can fix. It's either metabolism or a gland problem and has been very frustrating for me pretty much my whole life

Hello all,
I am a physician and throughout my entire life I hated being the one that was always "so skinny". The only people who wanted to be like me were fat people who would keep saying, "you're so lucky you can eat anything and not gain weight." But I didnt feel so lucky. At 5'10'' and 135 pounds, my BMI was 19 and I hated buying size small shirts and it still looking baggy on me. I used to drink weight-gainer supplements, go to the gym, eat junk every night. I even took a 3,000 callorie drink everynight!! and still no effect and I hated it, I just wanted to bulk up a little like everyone else at the gym. So I did much research in my own field. I even considered taking steroid enhancements at one point, but the price ($1500/wk) and side-effects (testicular shrinkage, acne, balding, and most of all, cardiovascular disease) sheared me away. And so I came across cyproheptadine (periactin), a medication commonly given for allergies. It is what they call a class 1 antihypertensive. The reason they made class 2 (allegra, etc) was to avoid the dreaded side-effects (mainly blurry vision and the tired/sleepy feeling). So people did away with class 1 anti-histaminic medications because of invention of the class 2 drugs.
So I decided to give it a shot. I began with 4mg every night for one week. My weight did not change. I felt extremely sleepy the first 3-4 days only. I decided to take it at night to avoid the immediate post-taking tiresome feeling. At the end of the week I decided to up-the dose to 8mg (two four mg tablets) everynight. I gained 2 pounds at the end of the second week. I found myself feeling very hungry all of the time. I was always the type to eat a lot, but never really BIG meals, just a burger here, slice of pizza there, etc. Now I can eat a burger, slice of pizza, fries, and a cake in one meal, and eat that like 5 times a day!! Then I did some more research into what periactin actually does. It does not directly cause weight gain. It, in fact, slows down your metabolism (gastric emptying time) and increases your appetite. Those combined cause weight gain. And so I realized, the only way I was going to see effects of this medication is if I eat big meals while I'm taking it.
So I bought Ensure drinks (I am not trying to sell ensure or periactin) - the one with 15g protein and all the vitamins. I drank one in the morning and one at night. I then loaded up on carbs and proteins (whatever I can eat throughout the day). And day by day I was gaining a pound. By the end of a two month period, I had went from 135-165 pounds (IN TWO MONTHS!!!!!). I felt great. Someone even called me fat hahahaha...
But I looked swollen. My face puffed up. My fat was mainly in the abdomen. My legs and arms were still thin. So I decided to hit the gym. I devided my doses into One pill in the morning and One pill at night. I feel great!! My shirts are way to small now. My pants dont fit anymore. I have to suck in my belly to get into them. I havent used a belt in over a month. My legs got bigger so they fit nicely into my jeans. My BMI is now 24. I'm going to the gym and turning this fat into muscle.
My plan is to cut down to one pill a night for one month. I will keep a close eye on my weight. I can see my face has gotten less swollen since I divided the doses. I wish to stay 160-175. The girls seem to love it haha! They used to barely notice me because I was the scrawny kid in the corner, but now I look better, but even more, I feel better. My confidence is up. This is where I wanted to be. But I'm worried because as everyone I've read puts it, when you stop the pill, you lose the weight. So I'll see what happens. I'm just going to drink these Ensures like its water. They are packed with vitamins and proteins so hopefully that will compensate for some of what the pill does. I'll see what happens at keep you posted.
A patient of mine actually asked me about a supplement to gain weight. I started him on periactin 5 days ago, I'm excited to see how he follows-up in one week. Signing off---
