I am 55, and recently became very upset - had an argument. The next day I started smelling smoke. I have tried Neti-pot (cleaning the sinuses), extensive brushing with toothbrush - tongue and mouth, changing furnace filter, etc. I smell it all the time now, and I was wondering if I was so upset I had a little stroke, as there is history of strokes in my family. I probably won't spend the kids' college money on finding out, though.

Well, since my initial post, I've had an ENT visit, nothing. So, doc ordered and MRI, nothing. So, he sent me to neurologist. He ordered an EEG, which I had today. He wants to check if any seizure activity. I've been smelling cig smoke for 10 weeks now and I'd like to think that I would know if I had or am having a seizure. But, I don't get paid the big bucks, to know for sure, so leaving those sort of things to docs. More to follow. Now just to wait.

HI, I had this happen to me in the past but it was when we would mwke a fire outside the smoke would get into my nose But since last night I have the smell of smoke in my nose and can't get it to go away. It is very annoying and the family thinks your weird.... I took some Viks and rubbed it on my nose but the smell of smoke came back. I still have that smell in my nose this morning. I am 48 and I do not think and I hope to God that I did NOT have a seizure. Please keep me updated. Thanks!

This may be what is called Phantosmia. It is seen in epileptics and in some people who either have been diagnosed with, or may be in the very earliest stages of Parkinson's, along with those suffering from depression, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's. While having these symptoms is not indicative that you have or will develop the above medical issues, you could just have a diminished ability to smell "normally." This issue usually goes away after a period and will sometimes return.

I found this forum by Googling my symptoms. Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was going crazy! I hope it goes away on its own; I hate the smell of cigarette smoke!

I am so glad I have found out that others have this problem and sympathize with all of you.  It started about ten days ago with the smell of sandy dirt I blamed my dog for bringing it in and kept vacuuming daily. Then it changed to cigarette smoke.  Next it smelled like a house fire and now it is so strong I'm getting nauseous.  I can taste it.  This is horrable. I had an appointment with my chiropractor this morning for another issue and mention this to her.  She told me she had had it at one time hers came and went then she became over sensitive to other smells like perfume.  The smell of some perfumes would make her nauseous.  All of this occurred for her at the onset of menopause.  I'm in menopause now.  Anyway she worked on the nerves that go to your brain for sight and smell.  The smoke smell went away for about 10-15 minutes.  I have had a  lot of sinus problems this year and I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow.  I can't believe I praying for a sinus infection.  That would be an easy fix.  Good luck to all of you please post any results as I will do the same.  Nice to know we are not all CRAZY!  :-)

Your not the only one I have problems with smelling smoke also, and have decided today to Google it also, and came up with a lot of informatin. I do know I have a blockage in my sinuses but wasn't concerned about it, and also have a tumor that they say I don't need to worry about I've had it for years and it hasn't changed size and not to worry unless it does change size. Also I've smelled other smells but prefer not to say because it is embarrssing to me. So I am going to go see if I can get referred to an Ent doctor also, I have the burning sensations in my throat and feel like it affects my breathing also. Will check in later and let you know what I found out.
