It is the zyrtec or other allergy medicine. Do not worry :) I only take zyrtec for allergies in spring. A side effect makes me smell cigarette smoke too, also makes me feel like I have hairs in my eyes when there is none.

You may want to get your brain checked out. I have epilepsy. I used to smell strong smells, kind of mouldy cigaretters, or rotten grass when I was young in my late late teens and early 20s. It would come and go. I remember i used to freak out at my mom and ask, "what kind of weird cheapo cigaretters are you buying. they stink!" she would look at me and be all confused. anyways, to cut a long story short, about 10 or 15 years later I started having grand mal seizures. after all the neurologists, and tests, it turns out i have epilepsy and have had it for a long time and it sort of originates around the area of my brain where the brain controls my sense of smell. go figure.

p.s. this is not meant to freak you out of send anyone into panic mode. i am just posting my story for inforamational purposes and its just one persons story. keep the following in mind.

#1 - every epilepsy is different and every epileptic is different. the odds of actually having same syptomos and condition as me are very very slim.

#2 - epilepsy is totally not the end of the world and is managble via medication. i am a father, i have two healthy kids, and beautiful wife, i run, i snowboard, and i live with epilepsy. its not a big deal and quite frankly being aware that you have a condition is a god sent because at least you know you are not going crazy. good luck to you and all.

I know this is an older post. Hope you found your problem by now. But if not, here's a tip. I had the same thing happen to me and finally after reading tons of information online, I narrowed it down to the one main change I had made before starting to smell it. I had started taking Biotin for my hair and nails. It wasn't the Biotin itself, but the capsule it was in. The capsule was made from Dicalcium Phosphate. If anyone is having the phantom smoke smells, read the labels of any vitamin supplements you take. It was the FIRST ingredient on mine. I stopped taking them and it went away completely in about 4-5 days and has never returned. I still take Biotin, but not in a capsule form. I read labels now to make sure the capsules aren't made of this.

I have experienced this several times. I have now realised that it occurs if I have not had much water/tea/coffee during the day and I get dehydrated. My nose is dry and I get the smell of cigarette smoke. Wet the inside of your nostrils and the smell should go, then drink more water on a regular basis.
