I have been having inner thigh cramps for about 5 years.. I find I start having the cramps on days where I do a lot of climbing either stairs or ladders. The cramps seam to always start on my right leg and then shift to the left leg within a few minutes. I have tried lots of different stretches.. nothing ever seamed to work. And YES as a man, I have cried and even screamed. The last few times I have had them, I have actually had some warning of the oncoming cramps, just before bed time. My wife tried some absorbine jr on the inner part of my thighs and the start of the cramps subsided and they went away. This evening, I had the cramps start up in the right inner thigh again.. it came on full cramps and I managed to use another brand of "menthol" rub, it does not penetrate as quickly as the absorbine jr. but it stopped the cramps after about 5 minutes.. needless to say, I will be buying some more absorbine jr tomorrow and keeping it handy. I hope some of you find this helpful! Good luck to all with this problem!

Is it possible that inversion would help? That seems a good way to stretch the spine. I used to walk many miles and can verify that walking reduces the frequency of episodes, but does not eliminate them.

Try that "Hyland's Leg Cramps" product. Health Food stores and now several drug stores over the counter sell it. Inexpensive and it WORKS very well for me. It's the only way I know of to get quinine as it is no longer allowed as a perscription from doctors. My doctor said, unfortunately he was able to prescibe it and the only way he knew to get any was by drinking tonic water, but, as you demonstrated, it's not very practical to get up in the middle of one of these crippling episodes to get to te frig and gulp down a glass of the stuff. I have 3 or 4 of the little vials and keep them handy at home and in my cars, Although the "recommended" amount is (I think 2 or 3) 4 does the trick for me within less than a minute. Tiny little pleasant tasting tabs that dissolve very quickly under your tongue. This is one of the fastest ways for meds to be absorbed I was told by my doc. Container is about 3 inches so carrying one in your pocket is a good safeguard. I am in no way affiliated with this product, I just feel a need to share the ONE and only thing that's ever worked for me. Had these episodes now for over 5 years. I also changes from Lipitor to Pravastaton for cholesterol about 6 months ago and have not had an episode since (knock on wood) but I also agree with others to get up and move around frequently and I now keep the "offending" leg straight in bed as it always seemed to happen when I kept it bent for too long. Good luck, fellow sufferer.

Inner thigh cramps are the worst. Last night was the third time that I have passed out in three years. I have tried many methods of trying to deal with this devil along with researching solutions. For the most part they are a result of some physical exertion that day, lack of proper re hydration causing an imbalance of my electrolytes. I also maintain a normal low blood pressure.
Solution for me has been using the Morton Lite salt, water. my electric blanket is always on, though last night was the mother of all inner thigh cramps. Even after coming too, my cramps hadn't left and I couldn't get up for ten minutes or so. Thus the reason I am back to searching for a solution to these nightmares.
I had eaten out last evening and notice the food was extra salty (Chinese), so maybe the dance(Balance) of sodium, potassium, and calcium was thrown out of whack. Sleeping lowers your blood pressure, and not enough water to put the sodium level back to normal????
Anyhow, sorry to hear of so many others with the same problem; sorry to hear their are no solutions coming from the medical field.

I am new to this forum. I like all of you have been dealing with Severe Inner Thigh Cramping. My episodes started about 3 years ago. Infrequent and not too severe. They have progressed to being very, very severe. I have done extensive research and poured over all the info on this condition. There are many theories, and many potential remedies. (I say remedies, only in so much as they work until you have another attack.) I just turned 64 and am very active physically. I am in great shape and am an avid bicyclist. I also work-out in the gym 4 days a week. I stretch, hydrate, watch my BP, have been a vegetarian over 40 years. Don't drink, smoke, etc. There doesn't seem to really be any profile of the type of person who would be likely to suffer these debilitating cramps. Except, most of the time it is a person over 50 years of age. I have tried everything. Generally I will get one of these about once a month. Since I workout just about every day, it doesn't seem likely that working out is the culprit. I had an attack last night. It was in both upper inner thighs. Very, very severe. I always get up and hobble as best I can, because I feel it sends signals to the muscles that they have to re-orient to motor mode. The episode lasts about 15 minutes. Because I work-out a lot, my muscle development is pretty thick and larger than a normal person. Unfortunately, it also means that when the muscle goes into spasm / cramp, it will tighten to an even greater degree than an average person's thigh muscle. I believe as all of us Baby-Boomers progress in age, this condition will be more and more prevalent. It amazes me that a trauma this severe has no recognized therapy in the medical community. Nothing seems to work consistently. Only someone who has suffered an Inner Thigh Cramp can know the extreme pain involved. It is not even translatable to the common "scale of 1 - 10" that is often used to delineate how much pain a person is in during trauma treatment. I have had 2 episodes of kidney stones in my life, and I would say they were a close 2nd to this cramping. When I am in the grip of one of these episodes, I think death would be a better alternative to the excruciating pain. Of course when the episode ends, I don't feel that way anymore. I feel as if I am living with a Demon inside my body. I never know when it will strike. It is some comfort knowing that there are other people out there who know just what I am feeling. Yet, also knowing that there is no real treatment out there, I feel as if I am at the whimsical mercy of a savage torturer.

Hello to all you having the severe thigh cramps...........I too suffer with these and after reading all of the posts here I decided to try the Leg Cramp medicine (over the counter) quinine. It helped with the cramping along with hitting or slapping that area of my thigh....BE CAREFUL taking this medication. I have now developed Atrial Fibrillation or AFib...which is an arithmia of the heart a side effect of the medicine.....NOT GOOD or worth having used this......I only used it approximately 5-6 times over 7 months.

I just started with the over the counter medicine three days ago and yesterday was diagnosed with AFib. This was doing my annual visit to my Cardiologist. I do believe this was a coincident owning to the fact that I began doing a bit of internet searching and recognized a pattern of symptoms over ten or more years that are associated with Atrial Fibrillation.
Monday. I get a reset to put it back in sych. I will stop the Hyland and appreciated your post. It was timely for me

Reset and no medication? My cardiologist says that I must take a rate medicine, a rythm medicine and an asprin.....It is keeping me out of AFib for now......he says the option is an ablation...........not too excited about that either....I first forgot to tell himabout me taking the Hyland as I didn't realize they had anything to do with each other until I started doing the online research....
Thank you for the response and good luck on Monday.

If the rhythm is shocked to its normal rate, No medications are needed. If it resets, then I will point to the Hyland leg cramp medicine. Since I have had at least 6 of these ekg in the last year, this is the first time it has showed up; not saying that it hasn't happen in the pass. This time after my ekg was a day after my passing out from these cramps. Pass history does have many of the symptoms.
Thanks for the support

I agree entirely re ingested immediate cures.. Just tried the slapping technique and it seems to have tricked the nerves back to normalcy. Thank you.

Indeed, I don't believe it's not a "cramp" as we understand cramps to be. It is a pain hot, searing, and I start sweating profusely. As the pain gets more and more intense, I pass out. It's happened twice, but it's been a couple years. The hospital ran tests and could see that the blood flow was fine. Puzzling for sure.

Thank you for your response. The great toe on my right side has been numb for at least five years. I hadn't really considered the connection until I read your post. The doctors don't know why my toe is numb either! My EMG test, that I spoke of in my last post, came back fine. It's just such a shame that doctors cannot find the problem for any of us. All who I have have seen have never heard of it and look at me like I am an alien when I tell them about it. Fortunately (but not for her) my NP told me that she'd had the same thing happen to her a couple of months ago so now she knows what I mean.

The Hyland had nothing to do with the AFIB, since I was out of it as quickly as it started. Our heart monitor had a feature I was unaware of. It tracked irregular heart beats. It showed 5 readings with the irregular heartbeat in the pass 9 months
So I guess I am back to square one with the inner thigh cramps. As with us all, we are chasing a ghost of the cause.
Thankfully, I haven't had another since Feb16th.

Thank you so much for this information! I had a feeling this was coming from my back. I had L3-L5 fused a few years ago and this viscious inner thigh cramping started after that, usually in the right leg. This may be too much information, but I only get them during sex. It's really putting a damper on our love life! This morning the spasm would ease up and then come back strong as ever, went on for about 30 min. I have tried magnesium and apple cider vinegar and have been taking Flexeril daily since my last hip surgery. I got one of the lovely Depuy ASR hips and had serious pain from that for 3 years, but since my revision I am getting stronger and healthier and able to work out again. This inner thigh cramp is the only left over from the 8 years that I was practically disabled. My job demands long hours sitting, but I will be sure to get up and walk around more! Thanks for confirming my gut feeling!
