I experienced my first bi-lateral, inner leg cramps last night after mostly sitting at a famly history fair for nine hours. I not only thought I was oging to die, I wished for it! As everyone else says, it was excruciating pain (almost to the point of passing out) nausea and sweat-inducing. I am on not any medications which may ease the minds of those who think their medications are the cause. I can't associate it with dehydration becuse I had already had over 60 oz. of water by the time of the occurence. I almost immediately drank two heaping tablespoons of Natural CALM, a magnesium citrate and magnesium carbonate combination, in 8 oz. of water which provided rapid relief. I say almost immediately because I neglected to scream (yes, there was a lot of screaming going on) to my husband that this is hightly effervescent and he needed a tall glass rather than a cup which he first used and immediately spewed the solution all over the counter, cabinets, and the dog!

I had a fun weekend with a 50th class reunion and parties at the legion hall all weekend. Lots of fun coffee, wine and beer. Then fell asleep on the couch. The dog barked and when I tried to get up an INTENSE pain came from my right inner thigh. The worst pain I ever had in my life. I couldn't walk it out or massage it without making it last longer. I was screaming in pain and I'm being honest. So when the awful pain stopped I surfed the net for answers. It seems there are many reasons for the cause but they mostly have to do with dehydration from alcohol and too much coffee. People recommended tonic water with quinine and drink lots of regular water. So far it seems to be working. Good luck to you.

yes, i have had severe muscled spasm and pain going thru my left inner thigh to my groin . the pain is so severe i turn pale and I'm at the point of passing out . My wife had to call 911 , my screaming was so loud. I was lying on my couch then tried to stand up when the s... hit the fan. The 911 emergency people finally arrived and got me up off the couch which immediately started to relax the spasm . I believe this spasm happens after i've had an active day on my feet and did some moderate exercise earlier on. Help

5 days ago my left upper front thigh started 'cramping', but it's not at night like all the other posts I have read. Sitting or laying down is my only option, but it still hurts. It's when I stand or try to walk I feel my leg is going to rip apart. As with eveyone else, cold sweats, light headed, feeling like I am going to die or pass out - worst pain ever. At times my leg starts to buckle under me and I have to grab on or sit before I fall. This so-called cramping has been non stop for 5 days now. Potassum pills and drinking water have not helped. I tried the mustard thing today but nothing. My pain starts at the upper center thigh and moves over to my hip area in one large horrible ball of pain. Been sitting around with the heating pad or with a T.E.N.S. unit hooked up. OTC pain meds or codine do not help. Tried 2 shots of rum last night and it released it long enough to do the dishes standing up but once it wore off, it was back and I could not stand up without wanting to pass out.
Have any of you gone to the doctor and gotten a steroid shot for this? Did it help?

For what it's worth, try a couple of tablespoons of raw, organic, unprocessed apple-cider vinegar - not just when a cramp begins, but on a daily basis. It seems to work or at least minimize these truly horribly painful cramps at the inner thigh.

I just had such a cramp on the back of my left thigh last night. I was watching tv on the couch, and it hit me like a rocket. I screamed, and my poor husband bolted straight up. He thought he could help by massaging the painful area, but I couldn't stand to have anything touch it. Listen everybody; the thing I've found that works the best is HEAT! I couldn't walk or even stand up, so I begged him to warm up one for 1-1/2 minutes one of these devices you warm up and put around your neck. It was an agonizing 1-1/2 minutes while I was waiting--I was panting real fast, felt faint, nauseated, and had the cold sweats. I felt like I was having a baby out of my leg! Anyway, I put the warmed-up pillow on the cramp and just laid on the floor. It took about 10 minutes for the pain to subside, but I knew heat in that area was the only thing that would work. Eventually, the pain began to subside. I tend to have cramps at night, often in bed, so I'm in the habit now of keeping a plugged-in heating pad next to the bed. Heat is very effective because it relaxes the muscle.

wow I feel lucky as mine have not been as numerous as many of you. I can certainly relate to the pain - like no other; broken leg, broken fingers, broken ribs and they didn't even come close to the pain.
In my case I sit way to much and don't get enough exercise. Since last episode I have increased my walking and will get up every couple of hours if sitting for extended period.
Also while sitting I will massage my inner thighs for a couple of minutes before getting up.
one other thing I started to do is apply Mineral Ice on my legs in the morning and again in the evening before going to sleep. Any drug store or walmart has it.
all I can say is that this appears to be working for me.
my heart felt sympathy goes out to all of you and I hope you all find something that works for you!!

I too find getting into a hot shower helps. The pain is so incredibly intense that I can barely think straight. My entire body is reeling from the pain. The hot water relaxes me which in turn helps me to recover from the spasm faster.

I too get inner thigh cramps & mentioned it to my Dr. He told me to stop the inner thigh cramp I must PUSH OUT with one or both hands on the INSIDE of my knee area (of the leg with the cramp). It works every time for me.

I hope someone can figure this out someday since there are so many people suffering from these extreme thigh muscle cramps. I've had them for 10-15 years now. Sometimes they start with my feet starting to cramp, sometimes it will feel like bugs are running under the skin in my legs, other times it happens when i stand up or in the middle of the night. I've tried the quinine, the pickle juice, not the potassium because my dr said it could cause heart problems, have never heard of the mustard. I've tried heating pads which helps a bit and have hobbled to the shower, increasing the heat to unbelievable levels before the pain finally subsides, but have passed out 4 times. Once I came to in the bottom of the shower, once half in and half out of the shower (got a torn retina from that one) and twice in the bedroom. I had two yesterday and, as usual, my thigh muscle is extremely sore. Drinking lots of water only makes my feet swell. Please, someone, can you help all of us?

Although finding all of you is not a cure for this problem, it is a sense of relief and calming. I thought I was alone. One year ago (Mar 2014) (age 53--don't know what role age plays) I was lying on my side, legs bent, on the sofa when I had my first attack. Both legs were involved and the screaming and panic associated was (as you know) blood curdling. My husband told me to step outside on the cold porch for relief. Don't know if it was the cold or the pressure of movement but the pain subsided. I was sure I was going to pass out as I hung on to him for support. My legs had a tender ache/light cramp for days to follow. In Jan 2015 it happened in one leg while sitting in a movie theater (I trampled the people next to me as I ran for my life holding back the screams!) Just last week (Apr 2015) I was asleep on the sofa, legs bent, when it happened again to both legs. My husband passed away 6 months ago so I was alone and scared. I tried to walk it out without success so I headed for the cold porch but apparently passed out and came to on the cold tile floor. I whacked my leg pretty bad and had a growing hematoma that I (honestly) thought was a blood clot about to explode as it grew to be about the size of a plum. I called my son who took me to the ER. They were more concerned with the passing out and I was more concerned with understanding the leg cramps because I know that caused the passing out. All of my blood work was fine, U/S showed no clots in either leg and there was no aortic aneurysm. I know all of the old wives tales and am willing to try all of them but I wish we knew what the true cause is. I had been eating candy for a few days that I try to avoid but certainly not more than I've eaten before without cramping.
My guess is it must be pressure on a nerve that the bend of the leg is causing. I would associate it to the bent legs on the couch but it happened sitting in a theater so I am thinking nerve. I am on no medications at all. I did have ibuprofen earlier that evening. I drink on average 32 oz of water plus other fluids a day. I have been noted to have anemia and Vit D deficiency. They said my potassium was fine and didn't check my magnesium. I do have a lot of stress--as I said my husband passed away 6 months ago after suffering with pancreatic cancer for 6 months. I have had calf and foot cramps in the past and honestly do believe that a bar of Ivory soap between the mattress and fitted sheet helps (don't know why!).

My heart goes out to the guest who lost her hubby to pancreatic cancer. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Since my last post (I'm the one that has passed out 4 times), I have tried all the home remedies with no success. I did stop taking my water pill (triamterene) and the leg cramps have diminished greatly. I am now seeing a vascular cardiologist - he has changed my water pill and I have quite a few tests upcoming.
Don't stop looking for answers, everyone. If we keep questioning and seeking, someone is bound to hear us and find the answer.

If your blood pressure is that low and your pulse is that slow, then you're not getting enough salt in your diet. Sodium is just as essential as potassium, magnesium and calcium, and if you drink a lot of water, your sodium levels will be lower. I would add a little sea salt to your water, or salt your food a bit more, and your cramps will go away.
