Basically I've discovered that I get these inner thigh cramps when my electrolytes are out of whack.

Water, sugar, potassium (salt), magnesium & calcium.

Too much exercise, too many carbs, too much insulin at the wrong time and never enough plain water. Dehydration and hot weather makes them worse.

Only the devil himself could inflict more physical pain on a human (think Job) than these inner thigh cramps do. I've had 9 bouts of kidney stones during a 18 mo. period. The pain from my kidney stones doesn't even compare to the excruciating acute pain of these cramps.

Definitely try magnesium. Worst side effect is diarrhoea.

epsom salts in bath also supplies magnesium. Maybe use as preventative 3x per week.

lots of water.

best wishes to you all. Haven't had one for ages. I've cut out most junk food, reduced sugar intake

and eating lots of green leafy veg, figs and grapes.

I agree about the statins being a source of this agony. I also take blood pressure pills & believe they are a factor. I have found these cramps occur when I sleep on my side so will try sleeping on my stomach & to stay better hydrated. The inner thigh pain is so bad for me that I cannot stand, but sitting on the side of the bed gives some relief. I nearly pass out & sweat during these episodes. There is a leg cramp medication available in the USA at most pharmacies including Wal-Mart. I believe it is made by Hyman's. Pickle juice, mustard, and salt are helpful and I am going to commence consuming a pickle with juice before going to bed. Hope it works because this pain is debilitating & I cannot walk when after it commence.

last night was the first time I have every had one. I thought I was going to die. I got up to walk it off, like any other cramp and it only made it worse. There was no putting the leg down. It was exactly like everyone is saying. It felt like the muscle was ripping apart. My daughter brought me water and every food in the house with potassium. After about 20 minutes it was tolerable. I have no idea how anyone functions after one of these episode. All day my leg has been so sore. Thank you for all your suggestions, I will definitely be out shopping tomorrow and keeping some of these things by my bedside.

What works for me is to get a hand towel wet and heat it in the microwave. Then I apply the towel to my leg and the pain goes away after about five minutes. I live alone and it's hell to get myself to the microwave as it hurts SO badly that I can barely walk. The pain is so severe that I am nauseated, cold and clammy. One time I passed out on the kitchen floor waiting for the towel to heat. My doctor said it was because the pain was so great--guess that is what a "10" is. I've been to several doctors, had tests at Mayo and none of them knows what I am talking about or can give any advice.

Like others, I am very happy I have found this blog site.  Not to see that others have been suffering from these cramps, but more to know that it isn't as uncommon as I thought it was. I am a 37-year-old man and have only had these occurring for about 6 months. Last night was when it struck most recent and this time it hit both inner thighs at once, which had never happened. Usually it is just one leg, but as most of you have noted it almost always happens when sleeping and turning over or stretching. I don't understand this and would love for someone to have some more answers. It is debilitating for approx. 10 minutes and like one of you posted I am surprised that neighbors don't call someone due to the painful screams that come from my apartment. I feel like I have to sleep very carefully and from what I have experienced it hits me almost once a month. I am going to try the pickle juice that one posted, but I immediately drink as much water as I have access to, but it seems to work itself out in the time I described. Last night was the worst though because for the first time it attacked both legs at the same time. I also get calf cramps in the same situation, but it mostly these inner thigh cramps that are puzzling me. The worst part of it is that where the cramps are is not an area of the leg that can be stretched out. It is painfull and disconcerning to say the least. I can only hope there can be a cause that is discovered.

I suffer from these as well.  I am positive they are linked to sugar intake before bed and dehydration.  I got one so bad a few years ago that I did pass out on the way to try to get in a hot tub.  When I passed out I went down on my left ankle wrong and broke the bone right in half.   Had to go to hospital in an ambulance and have 2 plates in my ankle.  They thought I had a vagal nerve reaction to the pain.    I am careful about the quantity of sweet thiings I eat at night,  and if I feel one coming on I immediately drink as much water as I can get down, sometimes hanging on to the kitchen cabinet and drinking right out of the faucet if I have to.   then I lay on the floor in agony, but at least if you're already on the floor you can't injure yourself passing out and falling.

I have found that a potassium supplement helps mine. Taking two daily and drinking tons of water seems to keep them away.

I just had a severe inner thigh cramp a little while ago ....always scares me ....the pain is so intense!  The first one I had was about a year ago.  I was by myself and thought I must be having a blood clot or something....I couldn't walk.  When I got up to walk I started getting nauseous and faint.  Dialed 911, took an aspirin and it finally went away after the medics arrived.  Felt like a fool....but can not describe how intense the pain was!   I always get clammy and almost faint.  My sympathies to you all....I surely know how it feels.

I am so happy to find this site and others in regards to inner thigh spasms. I've read the posts and like what the physicians have said and have learned alot. Mines were triggered after jogging and this recent time, afterwards, I sat down for an extended period of time. I now realize that my lower back and blood flow restrictions is a trigger for this torment attack. Age also seems to be common factor in these post. So far, an aspirin has helped me and I keep a bottle next to my bed. Once, I did lay still and kept my legs straight and it went awy imediately, but this past time, I completely forgot and sat up and had to endure the awful pain until the aspirin worked.  My husband cannnot even help me when this happens, and I know he feels for me. But then again, he has praye for me and just to hear his voice while I suffer helps me so much.

Oh yes, I need to add that I am 51 and have had these spasms about five times and it started about 6 months ago. I am so grateful that the three physicians responded to this forum! I did lay over 3 pillows this morning and it gave me much relief in my lower back. Physical therapy seems to be a great avenue to deal with these spasms. The aspirins give me quick relief in about 7 mins. Hope I was helpful.
