Hi Dawn, I just went 7 weeks without proper sleep and also developed and Benzo problem trying to get sleep. I am now on Zoloft and the emotional and nerve pain is much better but there are problems with these drugs as well and I am looking for alternaitives. Might be worth investigating and SSRI to get your brain chemistry back to normal as the cortisone shot definitely does this.

It has been 8 months since I had a depo-medrol 40mg/ml Mthylprednisonr acet 40 ml. shot for post surgical pain in my shoulder. Commonly called a cortisone shot. Day 1-6 I slept a bit with the help of 1 mg of Zanax which I took when I realized I couldn t fall asleep. I sweated so profusely that my memeory foam king pillow was soaked through and even my toes had sweat dripping off them. On Day 7 I stopped sleeping even with Xanax so I stopped the Xanax but to no avail. I tried gummies, antihistamines, and alcohol. Nothing worked. For the next three weeks I was on an emotional rolller coaster that left me crying and unable to function and pretty sur I was going to die.My doctor in Canada denied that this was caused by the injection. Two doctors and a nurse in Palm Springs where I had gone for the winter said 6-8 weeks and then I would be ok.I sought help onboard the cruse ship we were then on. I had expected my sleep to return and was prescribed Ambien which worked but at 3 X the prescribed level By this time I was suicidal. We left the ship and flew back to Canada from Australia , 23 hours, wide awake. On arriving home I started Zoloft for the crushing depression. and added .5 mg Xanax. No improvement. I went to treatement for Xanax use for two weeks and slept a total of 2 hours over that two week period.I Abilify was added to the Zoloft . I returned to my home in Palm Springs took 1 mg of Xanax with the Zoloft and Abilify and I could sleep at night but was still exhausted during the day. I was unable to nap during the day which has been a life long habit of mine. The depression lifted and I did my best to live normally , resting in the afternoon by laying down for a couple of hours but wiith out sleeping. At 7 months I was all of a sudden able to nap during the day and am feeling normal.I am staying on the Zoloft and Abilify and .5 mg Xanax as I do have Complex PTSD which may have been the underling reason for. my severe reaction. Suffices to say I will never have another ' Costisone shot " although I have had many in the past with minimal side effects. I warn my friends to avoid them. I hope this helps someone out there. This was the scariest expericne of my life. I have never been suicidal or months without sleep in my life. I certainly have grown in empathy and understadng for people with major depressive disorders ..happy to be alive. Suzanne 604-970-5589

Hello All, It has been 8 months since my " Costisone shot" actually it was 1 ml Depo-Medrol 40mg/ML..so 40 mg. For the first 6 days I could sleep with the help of 1 mg Xanax. On day 8 ,I stopped sleeping.
For the first 6 days I sweated to profusely at night that my memory foam king pillow was so wet I had to wring it out. There were drops of sweat coming off my toes. No exaggeration.
After two weeks I went to my family doctor in Palm Springs who told me 3-4 weeks and this would pass and to use gummies. The first night the gimmies helped a bit but then not at all. I tried antihistamines and gummies together and that would give me about 2 hours sleep. The drugs made me feel terrible.
At three weeks i was crying most of the day completely unable to manage my thoughts or my reaction to them. At 4 weeks my mood stabilized but I still could not sleep but I was confident that any day that would clear up and so we went on our scheduled cruise to New Zealand and Australia. The cruise was lovely but by this time I was unable to function becuase I was so weak from lack of sleep so couldn't do the day trips and just layed on the bed in our cabin venturing out to eat twice a day. I lost 10 lbs. on a cruise !
I sought help onboard and was prescribed Ambien, which worked but at 3 times the prescribed amount and for only 2-3 hours.I became suicidal.
We decided better get back to Canada incase I needed hospitalization. I started treatment on Zoloft and it made me more suicidal initially so I did go to hospital.I was trying .5 mg of Xanax but it didn't help. In hospital for two days I was put on antidepressants that were supposed to make me sleep ..they didn't. I was released and went home to try to figure out what to do. My husband and I decided it was best to go into a drug treatment facility in Palm Springs were I would see a doctor daily and they could try me on different drugs . This was helpful but I didn't sleep but gave the Zoloft time to work and they added Abilify which really helped. I slept 2 hours in those 2 weeks but the suicidal feelings were gone.
I got home and took 1 mg Xanax and slept.
I was not able to nap during the day even though I was dog tired and doing everything to make myself sleep , like walks , no caffeine, meditation, etc.
At 7 months I started to be able to nap and slept for two days straight.
Now at 8 months my sleep cycles are back to normal with Zoloft, Abilify, and .5 mg Xanax.Alcohol severely disrupts my sleep so I don't dare drink.
I do have Complex PTSD which is why I have been using .5 mg of Xanax for years to sleep and this PTSD may have contributed to adverse reaction but I have had shots in the past with no real problems, just increased energy for a few days.
This was the scariest experience of my life. I really didn't think I would live to tell this story, but I did and now have a greater understanding of those who suffer from Major depressive disorders.
I hope this helps.
