What is the purpose of intermittent catheterization? My friend was in the hospital for neck and leg injury. They put her catheter because she wasn’t able to stand. I visited her yesterday and she said that she will have ‘intermittent catheterization’. Does it mean that her bladder is not well also or something else?

I don’t know why she needs but intermittent catheterization is used for few reasons. I know some: emptying bladder contents when an individual is unable to urinate due to urinary retention, bladder distention, or obstruction, emptying the bladder for increased space in the pelvic cavity to protect the bladder during labor and delivery or during pelvic and abdominal surgery, measuring residual urine after urinating …etc.
