It is possible to both be anemic and have iron overload disease - hemochromotosis - which produces many of the symptoms you talk about. The heriditory type of this disease is primarily in people who are of Northern European ancestry. They can run blood tests on this. Here's a Mayo Clinic article, and there are many others on the Web:

I'm so sorry I am so late to respond, but hopefully you will see this! I have had major problems with iron deficient anaemia, in my 20's it caused me to take 2 long disability leaves from work due to complete fatigue, and dizziness. I tried the iron supplements, which caused me TERRIBLE heartburn, constipation, bloating and general "feeling like crud." I have always had problems with heartburn after eating...turns out that I was severely allergic to iron, my biggest symptom was heartburn. I have been getting N.A.E.T. treatments for my allergies, and it has been helping me out a lot. Today, I had my treatment for iron, and I had wicked heartburn immediately after my treatment, and it was severe for a few hours, then moved down to the "tolerable' level, and it has now been about 10 hours. If you can find a N.A.E.T. practitioner in your area, I highly recommend that you get checked for iron allergy/sensitivity, because if you are allergic to it, your body won't be absorbing it (hence the anaemia) no matter how you take it...food, supplement or injection. It will actually hurt you in the long run, and cause many other health problems. The N.A.E.T. treatments can clear your allergy, and then just eating normal food that contains iron will take care of your Iron deficient anaemia.
Hope this helps you or anyone else still reading this thread. You can find good info on N.A.E.T. if you google it, but as a caution, make sure the person who is doing the N.A.E.T. treatments is actually certified, some of the reviews you find complain about it, because the practitioner is not following proper protocol. Dr. Devi Nambudripad is the one who started N.A.E.T (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) and if you google her you will find good info and how to find a good practitioner. Hope you can find relief!!

Wow, I see that I am not alone. I am 45 years old and I have been anemic (diagnosed) since I was first tested at 18 years old. Whenever I take iron supplements, I experience an itchy rash on my face, neck and chest. I tried NAETand tested positive for allergy to minerals. It took me several sessions to clear my allergy to minerals And there was a huge improvement in my skin when I tested clear. In ever thought to test for allergy to specific metals, such as iron, but it makes sense now that I might have an allergY. For instance, I am a huge meat eater, especially beef and organ meats.
i just recently took a form of iron (pur absorb), and have been experiencing an extremely itchy and fine rah on my face and neck for a few days. This recent exposure is what made me think that I had an allergy because I was washing my broken out face and neck and noticed the strong smell of metal, specifically iron.
i plan to take this little packet of supposedly highLy absorbable iron to my neat practitioner.

I have been allergic to iron all my life. When i was young every time I ate iron rich food I would get a really bad bleeding nose and this happened until I got my periods. I have had such heavy periods that I would be laid up with them. Then they told me I was anemic. I found out that I could not take iron superlments of any type as they were slowly killing me. Now I have no more periods I am getting bad nose bleeds again. I have been tested over and over again and have been told that I have a rare form of anemia. I have a lot of bad health issues on top of this. I am used to being dizzy all the time and I am so glad to find out that I am not alone in this. When my Mother was carrying me she was eating fruit sprayed with DDT. I have this in my genes. I was tested when I was in my early 30s. I am over weight because of this and have always had trouble with that. I was told I would never have kids I have 4 and none of them have this allergy to iron. I am 48 now and was told that life would be very short. I have been giving times to live and die. It is scary when a doctor tells you you have 2 months left. Have been through this so many times and I am still here.
