irritation on vagina ..need some advice

I had my period earlier this week and during this time my vagina had started itching. I scratched it to the point where it turned really red and started burning. I thought it might have been because of the pad i was wearing, but its weird because this NEVER happened before. I also havent had sex in a little more than a month with my boyfriend who ive been with for 10 months, who doesnt have any STDs. I finally told my mom about my burning and she gave me a skin irritation cream and it started getting better. I also had skin dryness like crusts on those areas even before i put on the cream. & this all happened during the course of 5 days. I called my GYN and the woman who i was making an appointment with asked me if i might have herpes? but i had a paptest 5 months ago and the doctor didnt call me back telling me i had any problems. & ive been with the same person this whole time so could that even be possible? Please help!
