Hello,
after I had TIA stroke, or mini-stroke 3 years ago I’ve been on Plavix, together with Zocor (I’m taking the generic simvastatin since last year). Even though I’ve completely changed my eating habits and I try to be as active as possible, I seem to be gaining weight constantly. I’m now some 20 lbs heavier compared to when I had the stroke.
Is it possible that Zocor is contributing to my weight gain? And if that’s the case what can I do about it?
Hello,
Zocor on it's own should not cause you to gain significant amount of weight, especially if you're watching your diet and are active. I suggest you to talk to your doctor and do any necessary test to determine what is causing your weight gain, mainly because unexplained weight gain - when you are not changing your diet or activity level - could be a sign that something else might be wrong. For example, thyroid problems can cause unexplained weight gain, as can several other conditions.
Hello, my husband was gaining weight on Zocor, too but we also first looked into every other option than Zocor because everyone was telling us that weight gain just isn't one of the Zocor side effects. But, once my husband got his blood tested for liver enzymes, it turned out that some medication was causing him liver damage and that in fact he wasn't gaining weight, but he was retaining water because his liver wasn't functioning properly. Now, I'm not saying that's the reason behind your weight gain, but Zocor is definitely not something that should ruled out completely as safe medication. At the time, Zocor was the only medication my husband was taking.
