I had the same coughing pattern and i belive i have overcome it using garlic ! Yes seriously.
First, the symptoms of what i had. A tickle kind of sensation happens in throat as if something is scratching/walking in my throat and i cough. No mucous, all dry. Also the throat itched a lot of times during day and night and i krpt rubbing my tounge to subside the itch. Ears also felt itchy many a times. After a couple days, this sensation escalated and the irritation and coughing started for the whole day long, as much so that i had to throw up. Breathing out on every breath made me cough, so did laughing and talking. I was frustrated.

Then i had this feeling that since my breathing was also causing cough, there must be some infection in my nose. And to clear whatever the bug causing my tickly cough, i googled and found that garlic is the best herb that kills all sort of micro bugs be it bact, virus or fungi. So, i crushed 10 garlic pieces and made a paste. squished a quarter lemon and a big teaspoon if salt on it, so that the salt n lemon bring out garlic juice really fast. Then i put the paste in a small container n started smelling the paste through my nose, sometimes normally and at times really deep breathing deepending on the tickle. Continued doing this whenever i had that tickle throught the day and smelled It for as long as the smell did no settle, sometimes smelling it for up to 5 mins at one go. I made a new paste every morning for 4 days and kept the lid of container closed whenever i am not smelling it. Smelling frequency was about one min in every 5 minutes on first day and then was reduced to minute in 2 hours on fourth day. I am all clear now after 4 days of this garlic exercise. It killed all the whatever bugs everytime i smelled the paste, but i had to keep on smelling it for minutes together sometimes. Believe me, messy thing to do? But works. Pardon spelling n grammer.

Mine will be on one side then go away and come back on the other. One morning it was so bad I was gasping for air cuz every time I inhaled it would irritate it. I went to the er and after a while and a breathing treatment, it went away. I don't have asthma but the stress of trying to breathe irritated my lungs. Water, honey and cough drops don't work. It's almost on the side of my tongue so nothing touches it when I swallow but air sure triggers it!

Yes, that happened to me for 30 years. Doctors gave me allergy meds. Some gave me acid reflux meds. When I finally got to an allergist, I didn't have allergies or acid reflux. I had a bronchoscopy and still they didn't know why. Then I was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety at 60 yrs old. The tickle stopped with Zoloft. I found a web site that talked about treatment with Zoloft for throat tickle caused by genetic nerves in your neck that may not have formed properly and can't distinguish pain from a tickle. I lost the site, that's how I arrived on this page.

This is the exact thing that happens to me, and I only get one eye watering too. It's honestly scary because it feels like you're going to suffocate and it's seemingly out of nowhere... I wonder what causes this

hello there! I have had this problem reoccur every couple of months since I was 16 and I am nearly 20 now - 4 years!!!! I have been back and forth to the doctors who have treated me for asthma, chest infections, acid reflux, sent me for x-rays gave me a blood test which they concluded I had high red blood cells and low white blood cells but they didn't follow this up and also took me for breathing tests - everything has come up blank, they basically told me as they couldn't find anything it must all be in my head.

The coughing started 4 years ago when I went to a festival and camped in the freezing cold for a week - a month later after returning from the festival I went to the doctors and told them the case and they shunned me off saying it was just a cold - I strongly believe if they gave me antibiotics then I wouldn't have this issue now as I believe at the time I had a severe chest infection.

After a few more months I still had the coughing which I had started being sick with and had missed a few weeks of school from coughing till I was sick. They said it was acid reflux and gave me some tablets for that and a big bottle of gaviscon, this also after months of trying didn't subside it.

I asked about a possibility to an allergy to dust as the coughing seems to kick off when I'm in a stuffy room but they said if I were to be allergic to dust my breathing would be affected and seen as it was all normal it wasn't the case. They gave me an inhaler as a precaution but again this didn't work, in fact whether it was related to the inhaler or not when I used it I would be more sick on those days than when I didn't take it - I told the doctors this and they advised me to stop taking it.

For the past 4 years I have gone with periods of violent coughing to the point where I'm red in the face and often throwing up till there is nothing left in my stomach - a lot of the time I throw up a white foam.

I can go months without any symptoms and no coughing and then my throats begins to feel scratchy and my nose gets blocked and runny and the exact same cycle starts again, and I have to suffer with being woken up in the night to be sick and cough for hours on end and often crying in pain and annoyance of a tickle/scratch in my throat not going away.

I sleep proped up constantly which drives me mad but after 4 years this now has little effect and the coughing happens regardless - the only thing that seems to stop it is coughing viciously for a few hours and walking around until I fall asleep with exhaustion.

Seen as the doctors won't do anything I have had to self medicate the best I can so I am constantly covered in vapour rub on my throat and chest have nasal menthol inhalers I use religiously and I use a cough syrup called broncho stop which works for about half an hour but the cough doesn't take long to flare up.

I've got to my wits end now! It's got to the point where this cough is affecting my studies (I'm in university now!) and I am coughing in class to the point where I have to run to the toilet and be sick. Since being at uni for one year I have been to the doctors twice and had a chest x-ray which came back clear. (I'm not surprised though as the issue is my throat!!!) and had a blood test which as said above came back as high red blood cells and low white blood cells - the doctors were concerned at first but after a second blood test when the coughing period had subsided the 2nd test came back clear and it was never followed up again.

I have periods of times where the cough subsides and everything is fine, but it always comes back - I am a healthy 20 year old with no medical problems and no regular medication and this cough is ruining my life, after 4 years I want it gone.

Can someone suggest what to do I'm at my wits end!

Hi Brewhaha, I see your post it from over a year ago... but I still decided to write to you, because you described the exact same thing that is happening to me... I am going crazy with this itch!!! And I am panicking every time because I feel like chocking when it happens. Have you found the reason/solution to our problem? I would love to hear from you. Thanks!
