After having done a lot of research over the same tickle in the throat that everybody here is describing and that I have had for the past 23 years, I finally found an explanation that works for me. It's called laryngeal sensory neuropathy or sensory neuropathic cough, or neurogenic cough, which comes down to damage to the laryngeal nerve, most probably as a result of acid reflux. I have times where even bread crumbs, breathing, or the seed from a strawberry can irritate it and cause me to cough. So, research says that the only medication that has been found to help is an antidepressant, gabapectin being one of the two mentioned. Since you can't just go to a drug store and buy it, I opted for St. John's Wort, which studies have shown to work for neuropathic pain. I've been trying 600 mg in the morning, 300 at night for the past couple days, and guess what, no more tickle. I'll see if it continues, but after 23 years of violent coughing, I'm very pleased to see it stop. But, keep in mind, you can't heal the nerve if you don't do something about acid reflux, so be prepared to work on both. Although I do take Nexium, I have also discovered that melatonin is great for acid reflux and have incorporated that with the idea of eventually weaning myself off Nexium. We'll see how it plays out over the coming weeks.

There can be severe side effects from taking Omeprazole for long periods of time and you have to gradually ween yourself off of it or your symptoms will flare back up even worse. Changing up your diet can relieve symptoms as well as drinking chamomile tea and crystallized ginger. It helped me.

My throat itches any time of the day and during the night when I want to go to sleep. During the day, when I feel so sleepy that I just close my eyes and start nodding off, my throat just starts itching and coughing. I don't know why my eyes closing will incur my throat to itch. please help. It has started to get worse at night just when I enter sleep mode.

I know this is much later but Amberlylacy what did the ent say? I have had very similar problem for about five years. It's on and off again but always on the right side and nothing helps but saltines...I guess it scratches the itch. I hate waking up coughing.

I found chewing on a small piece of raw ginger & only having to swallow a little of it takes the tickle away for a few hours. It's a little spicy/warm & doesn't taste great but neither does Buckley's. Yes, that tickle is aggravating when it won't go away!! Lately I've been waking up after a few hrs with that darn tickle, I'll cough but I can feel the tickle returning soon after & then have to cough again. I keep a small piece of ginger on my bedside table.

hello everyone, i live in africa, and this is very common. usually its caused by allergy but in most cases its caused by worms, you would need to deworm! or have your stool checked :-)
for quick relief, crash and swallow garlic,it helps alot. (just a small bit) as many times as needed.
also extract lemon juice and take a spoon eachtime the cough starts. add a bit of honey if you are not allergic to it.
i also would advice covering ur chest and throat area when you sleep. sleeping in t-shirt or covering yourself .good luck!
