Guys,

Itchy/sore penis/scrotum can be caused by a yeast infection commonly known as thrush.

It can be spread through sexual contact but you can also develop it yourself.

Too much sugar in your system can feed particular yeasts in your gut flora, making these yeasts gain prominence in the system.

Think of bread- making and when sugar is added to the yeast, the bread rises. (unfortunately, it won't have this affect on your penis, but it will cause you to have an itch so bad that you'd scrape yourself off a pebble dashed wall to get relief).

If you're not circumcised, you can have problems retracting the foreskin because of the tightening which occurs from the thrush. The pain is very bad.

A lot of people present at doctor's offices complaining of itchy/sore penis/scrotum and when further tests are carried out the person is often diagnosed with diabetes type2. As I said earlier, a high level of sugar floating around the system can bring the yeast to the fore.

Women who have type2 diabetes can get thrush too without having had any sexual contact with a 'carrier'.

Thrush can extend down the thighs as well, causing a very annoying itch.

The fungus is sometimes referred to as Candidiasis. It thrives in the moist areas of the body such as the foreskin/scrotum areas of men and the vulva/labia area of women.

Some people also get a recurrence or a newly recognised symptom of 'Athlete's Foot' from this yeast infection. It will manifest itself in the moist areas between the toes causing severe itching.

You don't have to be walking barefoot in a public/swimming pool area or playing 'footsie' under the table, as in 'When Harry Met Sally' to get Athlete's Foot.

Canesten cream is used to treat these types of fungal infections (buy over the counter in Ireland). It is applied to the areas of itch and really helps to clear it up. Women can get Canesten in pessary form. Maybe it is marketed under different names in other parts of the world...I don't know.

The active ingredient is: clotrimazole.

Be careful that you are aware of contraindications before using it. Your pharmacist or doctor should advise.

I should also mention that a person can get thrush from undergoing a course of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill different bacteria, but allow others to thrive. It is well known for people to get 'a dose' of thrush after treatment with antibiotics.

Bottom line:

Whether you're a man or a woman, if you get 'the itch' down 'below', try to find the underlying cause. If you go to the doc, he/she will reach for the script pad to get rid of your problem. Doctors tend to treat symptoms rather than look for causes.

If you go  to your doctor because of the itch, ask for a urine/blood test for your sugar levels. Modern doctors should be able to do this in their office without having to refer you to a hospital. However if, as a result of the test, the urine/blood shows a higher than normal level of sugar, the doctor should refer you for more conclusive tests at a hospital/lab.

There are millions of people across the world walking around with type2 diabetes.....and they are unaware that they have it.

In my own case, I presented at the doc's with the penile itch. He told me that I had thrush and that I had contracted it from my wife. I explained to him that my wife had not got thrush and that we had not been 'intimate' for months (she was recovering from a horrific car accident). He went on to say that I ''must have been with someone else". He wrote a script for Canesten......explained how to apply it (great fun) and was sending me on my way.

I presented with an itchy 'willly' and was being sent home diagnosed as an adulterer. As I was leaving...very annoyed...I turned to him and repeated to him that my wife hadn't got thrush and that I had not been with anyone else. Seeing the annoyance in my face, he reached into a drawer, took out a little bottle and asked me to pee into it. I duly did so. He tested it with a 'diagnostic test strip' (available over the counter in pharmacies) and said, "I'm glad I got you to do that". The strip showed I had a very high level of sugar in my urine. He referred me to the diabetic section of my local hospital for further tests to ascertain if I was, in fact, a diabetic.

Had I just left his office and dispensed the script....and used the Canesten...I would have 'slipped the net' of being a diagnosed diabetic.

"I'm glad I got you to do that"........................yeah, right doc!    Needless to say I changed my doctor after that.

CHECK OUT IF THERE ARE UNDERLYING CAUSES FOR THE ITCH!!

Slán,

Vinny.

PS. I should have also said in my post (time to edit it expired) that a man or woman can get a 'custardy' type of discharge from thrush.

I didn't experience it myself and hence can still enjoy custard, haha.

Herpes, anyone? Not included in STD test arrays because it is ONLY diagnosed on a visual basis (i.e. you must have a visible sore to even be tested for HSV 1 and 2), even though most people don't get sores. Let me know if anyone comes out positive! I'm going around to all these forums with these same symptoms and asking. Will let EVERYONE know the results on the correlaiton btwn these symptoms and herpes as soon as any conclusiveness.

But, will try antifungal powder and saefguard for now :) thanks

ExCoOps' post explains what I have well, too.

To follow up, never went away with antifungal powder. Sweat and heat aggravate it the worst. Eventually I got it to dry out mostly by using baby powder, but any moisture at all brings it back to itchy/red/sticky, and I can even feel the texture change in the shower after the soap has been washed away.

Has anyone else developed hyper-sensitive testicles from this, too? Thanks

I to have had the symptoms for over 8 years now.  I has not gone away, I got tested for std's as well and none were found.  The docs don't know what it is.  I have to wear baby powder every day just to walk around comfortable.  I have applied rubbing alcohol to one side of my balls that are extremely itchy.  It burns like hell and still does not get rid of the stickyness.  I don't know what we are going to do.  I will try the safe guard soap I used that all the time growing up and now that I think back on it I don't remember having sticky balls then.  I'm gonna look up some natural herbs and see if I can find anything that helps.  Good luck I have been living with this for to long....

Guys I've found a greal relief for this! Apply jock itch cream to the red area. After that has soaked in a little bit then just slap a lot of baby powder on your penis and balls. I found this to help last week and its working amazing! I can't tell its the cream or baby powder but seems to be working great! Im thinking this redness is just from the penis sticking to the balls. So i think the baby powder really helps. Let me knowbif it helps you guys out.

I find that Thai girls are very useful for getting rid of the stickiless followed by a light dusting of talcum powder.
