It has been 8 weeks since I sustained my Jones fracture. I have been in a non-weight bearing fiberglass cast this whole time (well, having it replaced twice). Since it has been so long and my foot is showing no signs of healing the doctor has recommended the surgery to which I have accepted and am now scheduled to go in later this morning for. I must admit I am a bit nervous. Not only am I nervous about the surgery itself, but of the aftercare as well. The doctor says I will go home with a splint and then come back in 10 days where I will receive a non-weight bearing boot. The thought of the pain is scary as well and I pray that it won't last too long.
Although I admit that it will be nice to later on be able to take off the boot for showers. However, I am more worried about it healing properly and not messing up my surgery. I have the hardest time on the crutches. I sometimes accidently trip and land on that foot. I did recently purchase a knee scooter (walker) and that has helped a lot since I am so horrible on the crutches.
For those of you who had the surgery, how long did you remain in pain afterwards? And what time of medication did you take to cope with this? Did you have to have physcial therapy? And what is involved with physical therapy?
Who knew that just walking one day and with a small twist of the foot could lead to all this? It's crazy!

HI guys,
I am 22 I have had a jones fracture 4 times in the last 2 years. Yes thats once every 6 months. I am a pretty high level soccer player and we train every day. Each time i broke my 5th metatarsal (twice on the left and twice on the right) playing in a game. My first time I thought it was a fluke accident because I have never really been injured before. The second time my doctor suggested orthotics. I was given very wide orthotics for my wide feet that put pressure on the inside of my feet away from the 5th metatarsal. Problem is they dont fit into any of my soccer shoes. The third time I broke it I had surgery and they put a pin in my left foot. No again Nov 2012 I fractured the right one. Im going to get a pin in my right foot and hopefully no more fractures.
Its difficult to compete because as soon as I am healed my leg and muscle mass is weakened and takes a while to get to full strength. I was hoping to get some ideas from people to help PREVENT jones fractures other than orthotics, surgery, and vitamin D/calcium supplements.
Thanks
