I TOO HAD LEFT KNEE SUYRGERY ON 9/25/2009 AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLES. SWELLING OF KNEE MUCHO THERAPY
TROUBLE WALKING, ETC. HAD DR GO IN AND TAKE OUT WHAT HER CALLED SCAR TISSUES, WHICH HE SAID WAS THE PROBLEM.
HOWEVER, THIS SAME DR. JUST TOLD ME ALL HE COULD DO WAS TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW KNEE. MY ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT
KNEE WAS A SMITH AND NEPHEW, BUT THE DR'S OFFICE COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT MODEL IT WAS, AND THAT I HAD TO GET THAT
INFORMATION FROM THE HOSPITAL, WHICH I AM IN THE PROCESS OF DOING.

Please don't cut off your leg. Something will come along. You must have faith. I have been in pain since June of 2008 and I am now preparing for a third surgery on the same knee. I am seldom out of bed; however, I am going to research on the Net and then see my orthopedic surgeon on Feb. 27. By that time, I will intelligently be able to express what I want done to my knee. Both doctors who saw me for a second opinion admit that the first doctor was wrong. I want everything out and have all of the components replaced with a completely new apparatus. When I feel pain 24/7 there are days that I want my leg removed as well. This may not be the answer as there is such a thing as phantom pain. At least if you have a leg, something can be done. Phantom pain tricks the brain into thinking the injured leg is still there physically and you will ache just as much as if you had not removed your leg. Hang in there. It will end sooner than you think. In the meantime, I had my doctor prescribe Ativan SQ for my rapid onset panic attacks.

I have been in pain since June 2008. I had a second TKR surgery where a second doctor did some revision, removed debris from a nerve and re-aligned my leg. During the first surgery, mistakes were done and the first doctor told me that I had to wait 2 full years before seeing someone else. At the end of 2 years, I saw a second doctor who confirmed what I had been saying to the first doctor for 18 months. After my 2nd surgery, Iwaited 16 months and went back to the second doctor. I had blood work to rule out infection; an MRI and since June of 2008, I have had 22 X-rays; ultrasounds and now I am going for an aspiration of the synovial fluid to see if infection is present. There was no infection in my blood work. I want the complete apparatus that the first doctor used to be taken out completely and for the second doctor to begin from scratch. Augmentation x 2 is not acceptable to me.

In about 07 I had a TKR and it is a complete Failure. My surgeon told me It was scar tissue causing the problem and nothing he could do. This man ony does knees and hips with never redo!! My knee is stiff to a point climbing steps is difficult and riding a bike is totally out of the question. To me the implant is too large and not straight either. This surgeon never sends his patients to TP which everone is pretty amazed about.

Had total knee replacement 2003, started getting intense pain when 1st got active, like waking up. Knee loose, bone loss, doc suspected infection. I am 70, had knee done at about 60. Am avid golfer. Believe did rehab too fast which probably contributed to problem, but doc not certain. Was able to remove parts with hand pressure only. He states that 50% of knees get infected to one degree or another and many have to be replaced. Mine never had signs of infection and my blood counts and other tests should no infection. He did immediate tests when started operation on 1/29/13 and pathologist got slightly high white blood count reading. He put spacers in my knee and had infection specialist take cultures and took me off antibiotics. No sign of infection so put knee back in 2/20/13, very good results so far. The wait with no knee was very tough, but well worth it. A recent patient of his went 4 months before infection cleared up. Everyone is different but pre and post operation procedures are basic. Pre: Clear up any infection, especially bone. Make certain dental is fine, infection there WILL infect your knee. Eat to strengthen body for operation (ie blood and antibodies.) (Plenty of on line help and you should request advice from your doctor). If doctor plans on replacing without eliminating infections I would get another doctor. If must have spacers inserted to await infection cultures or clearing up infection plan very carefully for care with no knee. It is not fun. If have insurance a rehab center is a way to go but make certain it's a center that deals with rehab and not nursing home care. Home care is very possible and probably better if you plan and prepare properly. Proper diet is essential. Because of blood thinners and iron requirements it is hard to balance it all. Wound control and healing are essential 1st steps in rehab and diet is the key. I have been very lucky with both removal and so far replacement operations. Work hard on rehab but don't get bogged down with flexibility and strength before the wound is healed. I have found that 95% or more of the rehab is on my shoulders. Doctors are not therapists and vice versa. Take pain medication as required to sleep and do therapy. Wear brace and elevate knee when sleeping or when pain gets overbearing. Most of the health care people have not gone through what you have so do what is best for you. I have set goals of -40lbs and hitting a golf ball 250 yards again, it seems to be working. Do all exercises plus some of your own but do deep breathing and ankle pumps all day when you remember. Good luck, Gene

NEED OPINIONS PLEASE! I HAD A TKR 6 YEARS AGO, I CANT SAY IT EVER FELT GOOD, HOWEVER I WAS ABLE TO WALK, AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE PAIN!
BACK IN DECEMBER OF 2012 I STARTED TO HAVE SEVERE PAIN, ALONG WITH STIFFNESS, HAD A BONE SCAN, & THE RESULTS SHOW THE REPLACEMENT IS LOOSE (OSTEOLYSIS)...
CURRENTLY I AM BARELY WALKING WITH AID OF A CANE, AND MY DOCTOR IS SCHEDULING ME FOR A REVISION IN APRIL!!!
I DONT FEEL MY DOCTOR IS BEING VERY SYMPATHETIC AT ALL! I KEEP WONDERING IF I SHOULD STAY WITH HIM, OR JUST START WITH A NEW TEAM?
I FEEL A RETURNING PATIENT WITH A FAILED KNEE, SHOULD GET MORE OUT OF THE DOCTOR THAN...
"OKAY WHEN CAN WE DO THIS AGAIN!"
I NEED ALL THE OPINIONS I CAN GET AT THIS POINT!
WHO WOULD STAY WITH THE SAME DOCTOR OF A FAILED REPLACEMENT?
I AM 58 YEARS OLD & PRETTY MUCH FEELING LIKE IM IN MY EIGHTIES!!!
PLEASE ANY REPLIES WOULD HELP ME TO MAKE UP MY MIND! I FEAR WHAT DECISION IS RIGHT FOR ME!
THANK YOU,
JOANN

I too had to have revision surgery. I had my first knee surgery on April 2012, and the pain and swelling were horriic. I kept going back to the Dr, and he would only tell me that I ws "healing slowly". I dont know much, but I know that heaing slowly does not cause the amount of pain I was suffering. I could no longer cook for myself, I had to have a shower chair istalled just to take a shower. It was awful.
Finally in Oct 2012 the Dr sent me a letter terminating the Dr/Pt relationship. I could not understand this, he said it was beause I had missed some payments I knew this was not true because I kept a record of when and how much I paid him. My family Dr referred me to a Dr. who took an xray and examined my knee and told me he felt the wrong size hardware was used and what he could do to correct the problem. I was somewhat relunctant because I had been dealing with the pain for almost a year now, but we went ahead with the sugery. I feel like a new person now. I am walking without a limp now. I am forever greatful to this Dr. He told me of all the scar tissue that was left in my knee.
The Dr.'s dont talk about each other, but I could tell he was not pleased with this Dr. Now I want to file a lawsuit against the first Dr and I cannot find a lawyer who will take the case. If anyone knows of someone please let me know. I feel the first Dr should be held accountable for what he did or did not do. I could not shop, only if the store had the motorized carts, all else was done on line. My relationships suffered because I was in pain all the time. It was awful. So if anyone can help me, please let me know and if you want to know the name of the Dr who did the revision, I will let you know. It feels so good to live again..

Thank you for giving me some hope... I feel hopeless, with no where to turn. My 16th surgery, a right TKR has failed, the MD is arrogant to the point of my driver (I have to pay someone to take me 2 hours to Manhattan) said, "What a narcissist"! This from a driver who watched the surgeon walk back and forth giving commands to his beleaguered secretary. I have a cadaver wrist, titanium thumb, plate in my ankle, hip Gamma nails and a variety of healed breaks I KNOW when something is not right. So there is hope that the right surgeon will find what is wrong with this extremely painful and non functioning knee Let us all be well!

I do so sympathise with you. I had my first TKR in October 2009 which was never put in right, didn't sit straight. Was in terrible pain with it. Was then given three manipulations, again this was never going to work as the relacement wasn't sitting correctly. Was referred back to another Consultant who did the second TKP in September 2010 This time longer sleeves(rods) were not put in as my Consultant was leaving options for future TKR and the cement is loosening. I am about to have my third TKR next month and am dreading it. I do not have any options left now and can only as was told 'pray for medical intervention!! I worry that I may get an infection this time and then have to stay in hospital while they take away the new TKR and have yet another one. If the guy who did the very first one had done his job properly I wouldn't be where I am now. Its all very worrying. I could make a bit of fuss about it all, but all i want is to get some normality back and get on with my life!
