Hi Chana-- That is exactly the procedure that I am having this Thursday, so I will have to let you know. They tested me, and I had an infection way down deep that did not show up in any previous tests. I had to go to the Hospital today and have a Filter put in my groin so that I don't get a blood clot, then at the end of February, I will have to have it removed so it doesn't grow into my veins. The way that works is if I would get a clot, this filter will stop it from entering my lungs. On Thursday, they will take out my knee replacement, put spacers in there where the knee was with antibiotics around them, then put a cast on my leg. Remember, I will not have a knee. Then, in 6 weeks, they test to see if the infection is gone. If it is, they take the cast off, and put in a brand new knee replacement. If it's not, then we wait 6 more weeks, test, 6 more weeks... and so on. It could take as much as 16 weeks or longer, depending on how deep the infection is. I spoke to some of the workers in the hospital today about it, and they said that it is very common, which disturbed me because we don't know if this infection was there from the beginning, and I feel if the Doctors would stop treating patients like they are in an Assembly Line doing 10 to 12 knee replacements a day, maybe they wouldn't keep having this problem, or at least have it as often. I went in a different hospital in December to have a cyst removed, and I developed Mersa. A small case of it, but still. So we had to treat that before I could have this operation. It is very upsetting when you go into the hospital to have one problem fixed, and come home with another. Needless to say, the whole thing has me scared to death, but I will keep you posted on what happens.

Personally I got a Nickel infection from the first replacement because the Dr. failed to check whether I was allergic to any of the metals in the first replacement, and it has taken me 3 years to find an allergist to confirm this. So, in my opinion, if your Dr. can't do the job right the first time, and you let him do the new one, he could easily do something else wrong the 2nd time, and just try to brush you away if you have another problem. So, I would go far away,(away from all of his orthopedic surgeon friends that he golfs with on the weekends!!), and explain to a "Neutral" Orthopedic Surgeon what went wrong with the first surgery, and he will probably give you a much better chance of having things come back out better, than to have your first surgeon come up with some excuse for what YOU DIDN'T DO RIGHT after the first replacement and have the same excuse if the 2nd replacement fails.

I had knee replacement surgery 3 years ago and my complications are due to scar tissue and the wrong size of the replacement.  Doctors do not want to operate so I am left with swelling, pain, and difficulty with stairs.  Does anyone know of a doctor in the Baltimore/Washington area that could help?

My husband has had 4 total knee transplants on his left knee in 9 years. The first two were done by one surgeon. We then went to another one and he proceeded to tell us what the first surgeon did wrong. In Sept. 2012 the second surgeon did third transplant. Five months after my husband told him that he was sure it was loose again. Oh no the surgeon said, it will take time. Well in October of 2013 my husband had to have the third revision. This was was doing great until September 2014. My husband came home and said that he thinks his knee has loosened again. It was as big as a balloon. Back to the surgeon. When he saw the size of his leg he said he would have to aspirate it to make sure he didn't have infection. I simply asked him if my husband could be allergic to something to reject these knees. He flew off the handle with me. He said their were only 12 people in the U.S. that were allergic! He did the aspiration and we went back the next week for the results. The Dr. came in and said "I have good news and bad news for you. You do not have infection. The bad news is I have no idea in hell what is wrong with your knee. You are going to have to live with the pain!" After $400.000 dollars in medical bills, (thank goodness we had insurance) my husband is in far worse shape than before he had the first one done. No Doctor will even think about seeing him because the Dr. that did the last two surgeries is very prominent. He does about 400 knees a year.

You should be able to get the name. model, and serial number for each component of the implant from your Doctor's office or the Hospital where the surgery was done. Once you obtain that information, contact the manufacturer and ask if they have had any recalls on that model. The manufacturer will ask you for the serial numbers. Also Google recalls on the make and model. I have had to do these things as I am still having severe swelling from a revision that was done in March 2014 and 3 different Ortho Surgeons don't know what to do. Good Luck!

I hope now that a year has gone by your knee is doing a lot better. As for you that are fresh or a few months out from knee replacement. Please give it time, it is the slowest recovery you will ever experience. As for mine it has been a year and I'm still recovering and I've been told by others that have been through it that 18 months to 2 years is not unheard of. So have patience and good luck.
