What is locked thumb and how is it treated.

This condition is actually called Trigger finger in which a thumb or another fingers catches in a bent position. When this trigger finger is severe, the finger may get locked in this position. It is caused by a narrowing of the sheath that surrounds the tendon in the affected finger. It can get pretty painful.
Sometimes a person may be able to straighten the finger in a sudden pop but as the condition worsens, the finger may not be fully straighten.
The treatment depends on the severity of the problem. Rest, splinting, exercises, and massaging the finger are recommended for mild cases.
For more serious cases, a patient will be prescribed with NSAIDs, or steroids or will have to undergo “Percutaneous trigger finger release” procedure. In this procedure, doctors use a needle to release the locked finger. However, if any of these treatments doesn’t work, a patient may need to undergo a surgery.
