I took my son who is 16 to a doctor because of a strange mass lesion on his face. The doctor told me he suspected something called massrteric hypertrophy. This is the first time I heard of such thing but I was just shy to ask him, and he didn’t explain. He only said that they will perform some more tests to prove this. Does anybody know what this could be? Thank you

Masseter muscle is one of the most powerful muscles for its size in the body. It originates in the lateral part of the cheek bone and inserts in the angle of the mandible. It acts to raise the jaw and clench the teeth. This muscle functions is to chew food Hypertrophy represents an increase in size. If your son has problems with grinding of teeth during sleep, it is probably what caused it. This muscle hypertrophy does clinically simulate the appearance of a (parotid) mass lesion. Cross-sectional imaging will tell if it is muscle hypertrophy or another mass.
