How do you feel about it?

First experiences of guys who have.

How do wives whose husbands do, feel about it?

My long time family doctor is retiring as a direct result of the new health care act that takes effect soon. He stopped taking new Medicare patients some years ago because of the government interferrence in his practice and now that he's old enough to retire he is going to do it before Obamacare and it's burdensome intrusiveness in his practice takes effect.

My wife wants a female doctor and I feel we should have the same doctor so I will be going to a female doc soon. Like Oct. 22nd.

I don't mind having a female doctor as I have a female RNP at the VA now and she is great. However except for my entrance physical she has never had me sitting around naked. She depends on my home town doctor to do the heavy work of the annual physical.

My home town doc usually has me sitting there naked for 20 minutes or so while he pokes, prods and talks with me. I figure the time there gives him time to look me over well for anything that may look suspicious on my skin anywhere.

I'm just wondering what she will do. I'm don't mind the thought of sitting there naked so she can study me but I'm wondering how she will want to do it. Any of you guys who already have a female doctor: does she take time to look you over well or does she have you wear a johnny and just peek in where necessary?

I guess I'm more worried about her being uncomfortable or thinking I will be so she has me cover up.

Just wondering how it went for anyone else.

Also what do you wives think of your husband being examined by a female doc?

Hi njoynlife,

It doesn't bother me but I'm in the healthcare field.

Remember, she's your doctor.  It's her profession.  She's seen everything and then some.  I've had female and male doctors with no problems.  One thing I'll say is that it is common here for ANY patient to put on a johnny and not sit completely naked for an extended period.  They expose what they have to and cover it up when done.  It's more comfortable for both the patient and the doctor.

Your doctor sounds more "old school."

I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Dan, I was wondering how this is being done these days with other guys who have made a change.
The only concern I have is if she is having me cover up because she thinks I would be uncomfortable when it may inhibit her being able to look me over well.

At the same time I would feel funny saying something like I don't really need that johnny.

So I was just wondering about other guys experiences.

BTW, that more choice thing they talk about doesn't seem to be forthcoming around here. We now have only one insurance company operating in the state and they are dropping 15 of the 26 hospitals in the state when the ACA becomes operative. My doctor was the last one in my town to actually have a private practice. I had to go to a physicians group where we at least got to choose M or F for our doctor but they had only one of each taking new "clients". We're not "patients" any more.

I was in the army where they used to line us up 50 at a time standing there naked and they said "skin em back and milk em down" then some medic came down the line taking a close look and doing the cough routine. He wore gloves for HIS protection not ours because he wore the same ones all the way down the line. Then they sent us out, still naked, through the hallway where we often met service wives and family members on our way to another wing for another exam. We did have a few sheets of medical record papers with us and at first we tried to cover up but after a while it was like who gives a sh*t?

I worked with a married sergeant whose wife dreaded taking the kids to the military hospital when they were sick because she met naked GIs in the corridors. The army just didn't care.

The cover up routine is SOP now. Basically it makes everyone feel more comfortable.

I don't think the ACA is going to do anything but line someones pockets, and it won't be ours. I'm fortunate to have a doctor but they aren't taking new patients either.

I have no clue what to expect for changes to our patients. I don't really have to get into the specifics of a patient having coverage when I treat them. The service does the billing I just document what I did.

Well this is the 23rd and I survived my first encounter with my new female doc.

Since Medicare doesn't allow you the opportunity to visit multiple doctors to make a selection I was forced to schedule a physical with one at random and I was concerned that she might not be a good match for me.

Boy were those fears unfounded. I am ecstatic!!! God was surely watching over me this time and I'm quite sure my wife will be pleased next week when she goes.

It was like being with an old friend, talking to her. I was fully clothed during the whole session and she only asked me to pull out my shirt to get her stethoscope under it and unhook my belt so she could prod my belly. The finger wave was excellent. She had me bend over the table and drop 'em. That is the same way the girl at the VA did it. It seems so easy that way compared to my old doctor who always had me lying on my side. On yes, her finger was a perfect fit, not TOO LARGE. lol

She did know this was kind of a get acquainted visit as I have already had the Medicare paid physical earlier this year so I don't know if she will do more the next time. Time will tell. I am thoroughly pleased with our encounter.

She asked me about activity, so I showed her pictures of my weekly railcar adventures. She thought that was great and wants to go for a ride with me so I got her cell number.

She sent me to their lab for a blood letting and their phlebotomist is one of the best I've encountered.

Normally I come home with 5 band aids after this process. One in each elbow crook, one on the back of each hand and the final one on the side of my wrist. When I ask them at the VA why they won't just go to the wrist first, they say it hurts more there. ****More than four other sticks before going there?!!!!**** And when they get in the elbow crooks and find a dry hole they work the needle around for a minute or so looking for something that works. That's usually good for some fun because I'm used to it and I start laughing when they can't find anything. That seems to upset everyone else in the room. "We're poking holes in him and he's laughing at us."

Anyway, this girl was great. I told her which arm is always a no go so she went to the other one. I told her a butterfly needle usually works best and she used a regular style but with a fine needle smaller than the butterfly, she said. It worked great, one stick and she was done.

I'm glad it went well.

You've pretty much described my experiences too. Just lift and cover to exam.

The only thing that concerns me about that is they don't get to look over my whole body that way. There are places I can't see to know if there is anything that might need further investigation and there might even be something I can see that I wouldn't know needs more attention.

She did ask me if I had a cardiologist and the answer is no. After the bypass surgery I went for a stress test upon starting cardiac rehab but that was it. I guess they didn't feel I needed one. I remember the rehab technician/nurse reading the results that said I went for 10 minutes and 35 seconds and did not reach the target heart rate, which I thought was not good at the time. Since then I have learned that most people don't last that long on that infernal machine so maybe it was good and not reaching the target heart rate was also good. It started out flat for 3 minutes, raised a bit for 3, raised again for 3, raised again. It felt like I was running uphill by that time and after a while I said that's enough.

I got a letter from her in yesterday's mail dated the day I was in, telling me my blood test was all good and she mentioned the numbers improved since the increase in atorvastatin. To know that she must have received my records from my other doctor already. I'm looking forward to our next official meeting to see if she wants to discuss anything in those records.

I don't think we would be discussing that when I take her for a ride in the railcar. I know I won't bring up anything of that nature during a personal encounter.

I don't have another appointment at this time. I guess I just wait to see if they schedule one for next year. They have a place for me to sign up as a patient on their website. I plan on doing that. Maybe I'll learn something there.
