menopause and heavy heavy bleeding

I started going through my menopause years ago with hot flushes but now I haven't had a period for 8 months and suddenly came on near christmas but was heavy heavy period I was put on tablets but it worked but as soon as the tablets stopped the heavy heavy heavy heavy bleeding started again. I've now been on and off these tablets since 21st December but the periods are getting heavier and heavier with clots the size of golf balls and having to wear upto 5 pads at a time.
Can someone tell me if this is normal or should my doctor be sending me to see someone
