I have been diabetic for a long time but never had to go on insulin.  Well guess what.  I have to go on insulin shots after all.  So what do I do now?  Should I get a mini fridge to keep my insulin?  I may have to keep one at my office and at home.  I don't want to keep it in my kitchen refrigerator because the kids may get into it.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I think it would be a good idea.

Hello, Guest!  Insulin storage is not something you need to buy additional refrigerators for, which should be good news for you!  Here are some rules about it that may be helpful.  You don't ever want to freeze your insulin.  If you do, throw it out.  It will be no good.  Make sure that you use the insulin within its expiration date. Do not allow it to be exposed to direct heat or light source.  Check your insulin before you use it. If it has specks or sediment in it, it will need to be thrown out. Store your unopened insulin in the refrigerator between 36 to 46 degrees F.  If it is an open vial, you can store it at room temperature.  If you are going to store any pre-filled insulin syringes, be sure to set them up where the needle is pointing upwards. You can just keep your vials of unopened insulin at home in the refrigerator until you need it.  I don't believe your kids will be able to get into the vial, since it is difficult to pull the metal ring off around the vial.  You can hide it in something that they wouldn't think of looking if you are worried about it.  I hope this helps you and good luck with your blood glucose control!
