Mirena is different for everyone. Look, if you're spotting a little here and there or even a continuous period DO NOT FREAK OUT. It's normal to have different spurts of bleeding. However, if there is pain associated with this (other than your normal period cramp) then contact your OB. I have had Mirena for 3 1/2 years, went the first two years with no bleeding then started spotting once or twice every 4-6 months. It's totally fine and is just hormonal changes.
I just noticed this forum and saw so many negative posts about Mirena and wanted to say something positive from a long time user. Although it is different for everyone, it has truly been successful for me!
FYI- I haven't had any weight gain, mood changes, etc.

Wow,this is very interesting to say the least. October 2006 I had the Mirena put in and the following November/December I began to have these symptoms. First was anxiety, then came headaches that felt like an ice pick stabbing into my skull. Then I would have palpitations. I attributed my headaches to recent dental work and had a follow up appointment and was checked out to be ok. My hair began to fall out and I was having bouts of diarrhea. Then I noticed my heart rate to be in the 130-150 at rest. At the young age of 30 this was not acceptable. As a nurse I wanted to make sure I wasn't just stressed from a new baby. Went to see Dr and he noted my enlarged thyroid sent me for ultrasound and radioactive iodine uptake test.
At this time they wanted to treat my heart rate with toporol which scared me until I could be treated by internal medicine Dr. I was dx with post partum thyroiditis causing permanent hypothyroid. And now the light bulb has went off that this could also be attributed to my Mirena IUD d/t to effects it has on serotonin ? Wow..I am not a hypochondriac nor was I that old when this happened. I don't take this lightly I could have had a heart attack or stroke! I will defiantly be researching this more intensely!

I've had the mirena for almost 10 months now and I have been breaking out in hive for the last 10 months around the time I come on my menstrual. Now my skin is itching more and I found a lump on my breast.I read that, all the symptoms I've been having and mentioned were list side affects of the mirena. At the age of 32 I had a mammogram today about this lump and thank God everything is fine.On the other hand I have a few friends that love the mirena and a few that are having symptoms as I have.I hope to get this thing out of me this week;waiting for prior approval from ins. .
Sincerely,
Just Not For Me.

DO NOT GET THE MIRENA!! I got the Mirena put in March 2012, and it has been a complete nightmare ever since. I had an irregular period and spotted every day for almost 9 months after insertion. 1 month after insertion, I noticed I had become extremely moody to the point that my own family didn't want to be around me. I was just angry for no reason. My primary doctor recommended anti-depressants to help with the mood swings (After giving the meds 3 months to work, I realized nothing was going to help the anxiety & depression I was experiencing; so I stopped taking them). 2 months after insertion, I noticed my hair starting to fall out in the shower and while styling it; along with no sex drive. About 3 months after insertion, I started feeling nauseated every day, accompanied most of the time with diarrhea. The nausea would hit me at any given moment, but mostly the same time every night. The doctors ran all kinds of tests on me, referred me to a GI doctor & everything kept coming back completely normal. 3 months after insertion, I also experienced terrible acne; huge under the skin craters that eventually started scarring my face. I've never experienced acne like this; not as a teenager or during pregnancies. I kept telling my OBGYN that I felt like I was having a hormonal imbalance and he acted like everything was fine and normal, since I had just had my 2nd child months before. At this point, neither the doctors nor I had ever thought that it could be the side effects from the Mirena. Currently (14 months with Mirena), my symptoms are so severe that I'm having it removed immediately; after reading several websites & blogs with women complaining of the same symptoms: Weight gain, depression, headaches, acne, tiredness, fatigue, nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, mood swings, no sex drive, emotional basket case, back pain, dizziness, etc. Do not get the Mirena, it's not worth the pain, suffering, time or money. I honestly think it should be pulled off the market!!

this is that same reason I am getting one.. Since your post have things changed for you? I see so many bad things everyone is posting and not so many good things. I am not using this a birth control method I have been "fixed" for 18 years now. I am getting it because of my heavy periods and now that I am getting to "that age" I have been on my period for about 19 days started out very light and then just got worse and worse. My Dr put me on a pill that made it stop of awhile but then came back worse then ever.

Hello All,
I would like to thank everyone who has shared their experiences with the Mirena.
I had the Mirena placed in about 7 weeks after having my first born. He is now 18 months old. In early February, I had a panic/anxiety attack in route to work. I immediately checked myself into the hospital, where they confirmed an attack. Prior to, I was dry heathing and having problems falling asleep. I thought it was insomnia and just went with the flow. But after the initial attack, I've been seeing a psychiatrist and therapist. At first, I was diagnosed with Atypical Depression, but later with Bi-Polar Depression. I have moments of sadness, crying in my sleep, waking up paranoid, dizziness, confused, and extremely irritable. I've had to ask my mother to assist with the care of my son because I thought I was going CRAZY!
I am now on Bi-Polar meds, Ability, & Valium! NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS HAVE I EVER ENCOUNTERED FEELINGS OF THIS NATURE! I recently did research on the Mirena and now am convinced that it has contributed to my "hormonal imbalance"!
I recently scheduled an appointment with my GN to discuss all the above symptoms, my current treatment for depression/ anxiety, and possibly getting the Mirena removed!

Can someone tell me the approximate cost to remove the mirena IUD? I am having brown spotting heavy cramps, and I notice if i wear a belt and sit for a while I have sharp pain that really hurts. I am active in the gym and walking 1 mile or more aday but I am experiencing weight gain. Also, i have never experience acne or pimples in my face but now I have breakouts of dry patches in my face and neck and when that does not appear I have pimples all over my face. I really need this out of me, what bothers me the most, the doctor states the mirena has nothing to do with it, but I know that is not true I am 40 years old and have had the Mirena sine March it is not September 2013 if I have never experience those symptons before then how is it now.

Lovemama. It sounds like you have some symptoms of PCOS. I'd be interested to know your outcome without the Mirena. Hope things have improved :)
