Hi, I am new to this forum but I wanted to see if there were any diabetic people theat could help me with the problem of driving and being diabetic. I was wondering if monitoring your blood sugars while driving is required or how would you do it if it was? I am 19 and have been diagnosed with it for a while but now I got a car so I am wondering if it is a requirement or anything ? thanks!

Hi, I am happy that you are concerned about being a safe driver. I am presuming you are Type 1 diabetic? You would be on insulin then, so you should have some concern about driving because of the risk of hypoglycemia. How well controlled are your sugars, and do you experience many hypoglycemic episodes? If you are doing well without worrying about your blood sugar dipping into lows, I believe you are just fine driving. It is a good idea to carry a snack with you in your vehicle to have just in case you feel like you are having low blood sugars. A good snack could be a candy bar or any sugar that breaks down easy so that it goes into your blood stream quicker.
It is better to be safe than sorry because going into a hypoglycemic stupor could cause an accident. Not only will you risk injury but others as well. Anytime you feel an aura of a low blood sugar, you should check it before getting behind the wheel. It is the responsibility of the driver to maintain safety. How many of you are out there that are type 1 and have been driving for years without any problem? Have any of you been concerned about having a hypoglycemic episode while on the road? Share any experiences you have had.
